GOP Hit With Major Resignation—Border Security Champion Departs as Budget Fight Nears
In a move shaking up Washington, Tennessee Congressman Mark Green has announced his resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives—narrowing the Republican majority and raising serious concerns for President Trump’s conservative agenda.
Green, a decorated U.S. Army veteran and chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, confirmed that his resignation will take effect July 20. His departure comes at a crucial moment, just ahead of what could be a brutal government shutdown battle this fall.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I step away,” Green said. “I’m grateful to the people of Tennessee’s 7th District for the honor of serving them in Washington.”

To my constituents across Tennessee’s 7th District—thank you. The trust you put in me is humbling. I will look back fondly on my years of serving as your voice in Washington. pic.twitter.com/fwjVMCRtpQ
A Strategic Exit to Battle the CCP
While Green didn’t reveal full details, he made it clear his next mission is business-focused—and aimed directly at Communist China.
“I’ll be working in the private sector to help the United States compete against the CCP’s growing global influence,” he said in a farewell video.
Green has reportedly been exploring international business opportunities, particularly in Guyana—a region where China has been expanding its economic footprint.
His transition underscores the growing number of America First conservatives taking the fight to new fronts, even outside of elected office.
Republican Majority Shrinks—Again
Green’s departure leaves the GOP majority hanging by a thread, dropping to 219-212. And things could get worse.
Three vacant Democrat seats are expected to be filled during fall special elections—and Democrats are favored to reclaim each one. If that happens, Republicans will have almost no room for error in passing legislation.
A special election will be called to replace Green, who won Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s former House seat back in 2018. Blackburn is reportedly considering a run for Tennessee governor, adding another layer of political intrigue.
High Stakes for President Trump’s Agenda
This resignation couldn’t come at a worse time. With the government set to run out of money this fall, Speaker Mike Johnson is preparing to push another budget reconciliation bill—a critical move for conservatives to bypass Democrat obstruction and protect core funding for border security, veterans, and national defense.
Without Green, every GOP vote counts.
“We are facing one of the most important funding fights in a generation,” one senior House Republican said. “And losing a strong leader like Mark Green is a serious blow.”
Green had been instrumental in advancing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which included tough new measures on illegal immigration, sanctuary cities, and border wall construction.
Media Buzz and Missteps Fade in the Rearview
Green’s resignation follows last year’s headlines involving personal allegations made by his wife—allegations she later retracted and clarified. Despite the media frenzy, Green remained focused on his congressional duties and refused to be distracted by gossip.
He had previously announced he wouldn’t seek re-election in 2024, only to reverse course two weeks later. Now, he leaves on his own terms—with his eye on a bigger battlefield.
