Democrats Attack Trump Team Over Renovation Costs
As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, President Donald Trump is focused on restoring the beauty of the nation’s capital. But on Wednesday, congressional Democrats questioned the Trump administration’s decision to move quickly on a $13.1 million project to renovate the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
The dispute unfolded during a House Natural Resources Committee hearing, where Interior Secretary Doug Burgum defended the administration’s actions and emphasized the importance of preserving America’s most iconic landmarks.
Democrats Challenge Restoration Contract
Rep. Joe Neguse questioned Burgum about the Interior Department’s selection of Atlantic Industrial Coatings, the company chosen to repair the historic Reflecting Pool.
Neguse argued that the contract was awarded without a traditional competitive bidding process and demanded to know why the administration moved so quickly.
Burgum responded that all federal contracting rules were followed and rejected suggestions that anything improper had taken place.
“I’m confident the department complied with all legal requirements,” Burgum said, adding that critics were unfairly portraying the process as suspicious.
Why the Trump Administration Says Time Is Critical
The Interior Department has inherited billions of dollars in deferred maintenance across America’s national parks and historic sites.
Burgum explained that many fountains and water features in Washington, D.C., have not functioned properly for years, and the administration believes restoring these landmarks is a matter of national pride.
With the United States set to mark 250 years of independence on July 4, 2026, administration officials say there is an urgent need to ensure the capital reflects the greatness of the nation.
“Our country deserves a capital city that honors the sacrifices and achievements of the American people,” Burgum said.
President Trump’s Commitment to Restoring America’s Heritage
President Trump has made beautifying Washington a key priority of his second term.
During remarks at the White House, Trump said a highly experienced contractor offered advice on how to repair the aging Reflecting Pool efficiently and effectively.
The president later clarified that he did not personally award the contract and had never hired the company selected by the Interior Department.
White House officials noted that the contractor has extensive experience with major projects in the Washington area and was selected in accordance with federal law.
Burgum Rejects Allegations of Favoritism
Neguse also pointed out that Atlantic Industrial Coatings identifies itself as a woman-owned business.
Burgum made clear that the private individual who offered advice to President Trump has no financial involvement in the project.
“There are no payments to anyone who has worked for President Trump,” Burgum said.
Taxpayers Have Paid for Repairs Before
The Reflecting Pool has required substantial maintenance over the years. During the Obama administration, taxpayers funded a major restoration that cost approximately $34 million.
Supporters of President Trump argue that the current renovation is a prudent investment designed to protect one of America’s most treasured monuments while preparing the nation for a once-in-a-generation celebration.
Honoring America Ahead of the 250th Anniversary
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is one of the most recognizable symbols of American history and freedom.
The Trump administration says restoring it is about more than construction—it is about honoring the country’s legacy and presenting Washington, D.C., in a way that reflects the strength, dignity, and enduring spirit of the United States.
While Democrats continue to raise questions, administration officials remain confident that the project was awarded lawfully and that Americans will benefit from seeing one of the nation’s most iconic landmarks restored in time for the historic 250th anniversary celebration.
