Mexico Rejects Trump’s DEA

Sheinbaum Denies U.S. Collaboration on “Project Portero”

Mexico’s left-wing President Claudia Sheinbaum shocked many this week by openly rejecting cooperation with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). During a Tuesday press briefing, Sheinbaum dismissed claims that her government was partnering on the DEA’s new anti-smuggling initiative known as Project Portero.

“The DEA announced an agreement with Mexico on this so-called Portero project,” Sheinbaum said. “That is false. We have not signed any deal. None of our security agencies have agreed to it.”

Her remarks drew attention given the escalating border crisis and the devastating fentanyl epidemic that continues to ravage American communities.

Trump Moves Aggressively Against Cartels and Fentanyl Smugglers

While Mexico stalls, President Donald Trump has intensified his fight against the cartels that pump lethal drugs into the United States. In recent months, Trump has:

  • Raised tariffs on Mexico to punish inaction on drug smuggling.
  • Exposed the cartels fueling overdoses, including the Sinaloa Cartel, Jalisco New Generation, Gulf Cartel, Northeast Cartel, and MS-13.
  • Prioritized border security to cut off criminal networks profiting from the fentanyl crisis.

Trump has repeatedly made clear that America will not stand by while drug gangs enrich themselves by poisoning American families.

Mexico Balks at Stronger Security Measures

Despite acknowledging the problem, Sheinbaum has resisted Trump’s stronger proposals — including placing U.S. troops in Mexico to directly combat cartel strongholds and expanding American surveillance efforts.

“It’s not necessary,” Sheinbaum argued earlier this year. “We can collaborate, but the U.S. Army will never be allowed on Mexican soil.”

This refusal highlights the deep divide between Trump’s bold, action-first strategy and Sheinbaum’s softer, more cautious approach.

Why It Matters for American Families

The fentanyl crisis has become one of the leading killers of young Americans, while border states bear the brunt of cartel violence and smuggling routes. Every delay in cooperation only benefits the cartels.

President Trump is pushing for decisive action to secure the border and save American lives, while Mexico’s leadership continues to resist stronger U.S. involvement. For many, the contrast is crystal clear: Trump is standing up for American families, while Mexico’s left-wing government is dragging its feet.
