Trump Sanctions Judge’s Spouse

President Donald Trump’s administration took bold action Monday, imposing sanctions on the wife of a powerful Brazilian Supreme Court justice accused of leading a politically motivated campaign against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, one of Trump’s strongest allies in Latin America.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against Viviane Barci de Moraes, wife of Justice Alexandre de Moraes, and their company, the Lex Institute. This comes after de Moraes played a central role in sentencing Bolsonaro to nearly three decades in prison, a move many conservatives worldwide are calling a sham trial and a direct attack on democracy.

“Alexandre de Moraes is running an oppressive regime of censorship, unlawful detentions, and politically motivated prosecutions — including his disgraceful case against former President Bolsonaro,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. “Today’s sanctions send a powerful message: the United States will hold those who support human rights abusers accountable.”

Bolsonaro Convicted in Controversial Trial

Earlier this month, Brazil’s high court handed Bolsonaro a 27-year prison sentence, accusing him of trying to stay in power after the disputed 2022 election, which brought socialist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to power.

The conviction sparked outrage across Brazil and beyond, with Bolsonaro supporters calling it blatant political persecution designed to silence conservative leadership and consolidate power under a radical left-wing regime.

Following the verdict, Secretary of State Marco Rubio notified Brazil that the U.S. would “respond accordingly” to protect freedom and democracy in the region.

Sanctions Aim to Defend Free Speech & Democracy

The sanctions, issued by the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), block any U.S. transactions involving Viviane de Moraes or her businesses.

“These sanctions are part of President Trump’s larger mission to fight censorship and defend freedom,” Rubio explained. “Alexandre de Moraes has weaponized Brazil’s courts to crush free speech, jail political opponents, and spread fear. Those who enable his corruption will face serious consequences.”

This is only the latest step in Trump’s escalating confrontation with Brazil’s socialist government:

  • July 2025: Trump revoked visas for de Moraes and several other Brazilian justices.
  • July 2025: Trump signed an order raising tariffs on Brazilian imports to 50% to pressure Lula’s government.

The White House has accused de Moraes of “weaponizing the judiciary” to silence media outlets and suppress conservative voices — tactics that echo the same censorship battles Trump faces at home.

Brazil Fires Back But Leaves Door Open on Tariffs

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira blasted the sanctions, claiming there is “no room for negotiation” when it comes to Bolsonaro’s prosecution. However, he hinted Brazil might be willing to discuss tariffs and trade issues, admitting the current taxes are “illegal” under international rules.

Why This Matters to Americans

This battle isn’t just about Brazil. President Trump is sending a strong message to globalist elites and socialist regimes worldwide: the United States will stand against censorship, political persecution, and human rights abuses.

For many conservative Americans, Bolsonaro’s fight mirrors Trump’s own battle against a politically motivated legal system at home. Both leaders represent a growing global conservative movement pushing back against corruption and authoritarian overreach.
