Senate GOP Begs Trump To Back Who?
A major political battle is unfolding in Texas as President Donald Trump prepares to announce a key endorsement in the Republican Senate runoff between Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
The decision could dramatically reshape the race — and possibly determine who represents the Republican Party in one of the most important Senate contests of the election cycle.
After Cornyn delivered a stronger-than-expected performance in Tuesday’s primary, many Republican leaders are urging Trump to step in and unite the party before the runoff becomes an expensive and divisive fight.
Cornyn Defies Polling Expectations
For months leading up to the primary election, several polls suggested Cornyn was trailing Paxton among Republican voters.
But when the votes were counted, the longtime Texas senator finished ahead of the attorney general — a result that caught many political observers off guard.
Cornyn’s surprise showing has now given him new momentum heading into the runoff election, especially as Trump signals he plans to make his endorsement decision soon.
For Republicans hoping to hold the seat in November, the former president’s backing could prove decisive.
GOP Leaders Urge Trump to Back Cornyn
Behind the scenes, senior Republican leaders have been actively encouraging Trump to support Cornyn.
Their primary concern is avoiding a prolonged Republican feud that could weaken the eventual nominee ahead of a general election showdown with Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, who recently secured his party’s nomination.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said an early Trump endorsement could prevent millions of dollars in campaign spending and allow Republicans to shift their focus toward defeating Democrats.
“If the president endorses early, it saves everyone time and resources,” Thune told reporters. “It would allow us to concentrate on the real opponent in November.”
Thune added that he has been advocating for Cornyn with Trump for quite some time and plans to renew that push following the primary results.
Trump Signals the Primary Fight Should End Quickly
President Trump addressed the Texas race directly on social media Wednesday, making clear that he plans to intervene soon.
Trump warned that the Republican primary cannot drag on indefinitely if the party hopes to defeat Democrats in the fall.
“The Republican Primary Race for the United States Senate in Texas cannot continue much longer,” Trump wrote. “We have a Radical Left opponent and we must stay completely focused on winning.”
Trump praised both candidates but emphasized that the party must quickly unite behind a single nominee.
“I will be making my endorsement soon,” Trump added. “The candidate I do not endorse should immediately step aside so we can focus on victory in November.”
Republican Senators Hope Cornyn Gets the Nod
Trump’s comments immediately sparked speculation among Republican senators gathered in Washington.
Several GOP lawmakers openly expressed hope that Cornyn will ultimately receive the president’s backing.
Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), who worked closely with Trump during the successful 2024 Senate campaign efforts, said Cornyn is the strongest option for Republicans looking to keep the Texas seat.
“I’ve strongly recommended that the president support John Cornyn,” Daines said. “Now that the first round is finished, the question is who can guarantee this seat stays Republican.”
Paxton Maintains Strong Support Among Conservative Voters
Despite Cornyn’s improved performance, Ken Paxton remains a popular figure among many grassroots conservatives, particularly among voters aligned with the MAGA movement.
Paxton’s loyal base helped him remain competitive in the primary despite being significantly outspent by Cornyn.
However, some Republican leaders remain concerned about the attorney general’s past legal controversies and whether they could become a liability in a general election campaign.
These concerns have been frequently cited by Cornyn supporters who argue the party needs the strongest possible nominee to avoid giving Democrats an opportunity.
Campaign Spending Helped Shift the Race
Another major factor in the primary results was campaign spending.
Cornyn invested tens of millions of dollars into advertising and campaign outreach over the past year, allowing him to dominate television and digital messaging across Texas.
Paxton, on the other hand, spent far less ahead of the primary, limiting his ability to expand his appeal beyond his core base of supporters.
Political strategists say that spending imbalance likely helped Cornyn outperform expectations on election night.
Influential Republicans Rally Behind Cornyn
Cornyn also appears to have the advantage when it comes to support from key Republican power brokers.
In addition to Thune and Daines, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), who leads the National Republican Senatorial Committee, have both encouraged Trump to support the Texas senator.
Meanwhile, Paxton’s campaign is being managed by a consulting firm that previously worked for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis during his presidential campaign against Trump — a connection that some political observers believe could complicate Paxton’s efforts to win the former president’s endorsement.
Why the Texas Senate Race Matters
With control of Congress always hanging in the balance, Republicans see the Texas seat as critical to maintaining their Senate majority.
Party leaders believe that quickly uniting behind a nominee could strengthen the GOP’s chances in November and prevent Democrats from gaining momentum in a state that has traditionally leaned Republican.
If Trump announces his endorsement in the coming days, the decision could effectively decide the outcome of the runoff and reshape the political landscape heading into the general election.
For now, all eyes remain on the former president — and the political impact his endorsement could bring.
