Trump’s Golden Dome Gets New Price Tag
President Donald Trump’s bold Golden Dome missile defense plan is being hailed by supporters as one of the most important national security initiatives in modern American history. But a new report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the program could cost as much as $1.2 trillion over the next 20 years.
While critics are focusing on the massive price tag, supporters argue that defending the United States from nuclear and missile threats posed by China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran is one of the federal government’s most important responsibilities.
What Is President Trump’s Golden Dome?
The Golden Dome is a next-generation missile defense system designed to protect the American homeland from advanced missile attacks.
The project would combine cutting-edge military technologies, including:
- Space-based missile tracking satellites
- Orbital interceptors capable of stopping missiles in flight
- Ground-based defense systems
- Artificial intelligence for rapid threat analysis
- Advanced command and control systems
The Trump administration says the goal is simple: create the strongest missile defense shield in history and ensure that American families remain safe from foreign adversaries.
Congressional Budget Office Estimates $1.2 Trillion Cost
In a new 12-page report, the CBO estimated that developing, deploying, and operating the Golden Dome over two decades would cost approximately $1.2 trillion.
More than $1 trillion would be devoted to acquisition and construction costs alone.
According to the report:
- Space-based interceptors would account for roughly 70% of acquisition costs
- Those systems would represent about 60% of the total cost
- Additional expenses would include research, testing, integration, and system upgrades
Although the number is large, supporters argue that the cost of failing to defend the homeland could be far greater.
Pentagon’s Estimate Is Far Lower
The Department of Defense has offered a much smaller estimate.
In March, Gen. Mike Guetlein, head of the Office of Golden Dome for America, projected that the initiative would carry a price tag of roughly $185 billion.
Congress and the Trump administration have already begun funding the project:
- $25 billion was approved through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed by President Trump
- The Pentagon is requesting another $17 billion through reconciliation
- Additional funding is included in the administration’s record $1.5 trillion defense budget proposal for fiscal year 2027
That budget also supports military drones, artificial intelligence, and expansion of America’s defense manufacturing base.
Why the Government Estimates Are So Different
The CBO says the Pentagon may be planning a more limited first phase than the larger system examined in the report.
Another possibility is that the Defense Department expects to use funding from multiple defense accounts, meaning not every cost would be listed directly under the Golden Dome program.
This means the final cost will likely depend on how extensive the system becomes and how Congress structures the funding.
Trump Administration Says Golden Dome Will Protect the Homeland
The administration’s fiscal 2027 budget describes the Golden Dome as a “layered defense of the homeland” that will shield Americans while using innovative management and procurement strategies to make responsible use of taxpayer dollars.
Supporters compare the initiative to past defense breakthroughs that were expensive but critical to preserving America’s security and technological leadership.
Even the CBO Says Golden Dome Would Dramatically Improve U.S. Defenses
The CBO acknowledged that the system would be “far more capable” than the missile defenses the United States currently operates.
The report noted that while no defense system can guarantee perfect protection against a full-scale attack from major powers, Golden Dome could:
- Stop smaller missile attacks
- Deter adversaries from launching limited strikes
- Strengthen America’s strategic position
- Improve homeland security for future generations
For many older Americans who remember Cold War nuclear fears, these improvements represent a major step toward greater peace of mind.
Democrats Attack the Program
Sen. Jeff Merkley, the top Democrat on the Senate Budget Committee, sharply criticized the project after requesting the report.
Merkley argued that the initiative would primarily benefit defense contractors and promised to oppose additional funding.
Supporters counter that national defense is a core constitutional duty and that investing in advanced protection is preferable to leaving the country vulnerable.
Why This Matters to Every American
The world is becoming more dangerous as hostile nations expand their missile capabilities and modernize their militaries.
President Trump’s Golden Dome proposal reflects a clear America First principle: the United States should have the strongest defenses in the world and never rely on luck when it comes to protecting its citizens.
The price tag is substantial, but many supporters believe that preventing even one catastrophic missile attack would justify the investment.
As Congress debates the program, Golden Dome is shaping up to be one of the most important national security decisions of President Trump’s second term—and a defining issue for America’s future safety.
