Trump Doubles Down On ICE Presence At World Cup
Federal immigration officials confirmed Tuesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will be deployed in major U.S. cities hosting World Cup matches this summer, reinforcing the Trump administration’s focus on law enforcement, public safety, and border security during one of the largest international sporting events in history.
The United States is co-hosting the tournament with Canada and Mexico, but most matches will be played on American soil. U.S. host cities include Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Seattle, and San Francisco.
ICE, HSI to Play Central Role in World Cup Security
Testifying before the House Homeland Security Committee, acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) will be a critical part of the federal security operation surrounding World Cup events.
“ICE — specifically HSI — is a key component of the overall security apparatus for the World Cup,” Lyons told lawmakers.
HSI handles federal criminal investigations tied to human trafficking, organized crime, and transnational threats. The agency routinely provides security support for high-profile events such as the Super Bowl and the Olympic Games.
Democrats Question Enforcement During FIFA Matches
Lyons’ testimony followed questions from Nellie Pou, who asked whether ICE would suspend immigration enforcement during FIFA matches and related public events.
Lyons made clear that while public safety remains the priority, ICE will not abandon its mission.
“We are committed to securing these operations and ensuring the safety of participants, visitors, and local communities,” Lyons said.
Largest World Cup in History Headed to U.S.
The upcoming FIFA World Cup will be the largest ever, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches. Of those, 78 games will take place in the United States.
Federal officials estimate roughly 10 million visitors will travel to the 11 American host cities, making security coordination a top concern for law enforcement agencies.
Rep. Pou warned that concerns about immigration enforcement could deter attendance, suggesting that fear of detention could impact local communities and international perceptions.
Lyons pushed back, reaffirming ICE’s commitment to maintaining safe and orderly events for everyone attending.
“ICE is dedicated to ensuring that everyone who visits these facilities experiences a safe and secure event,” he said.
Trump Administration Emphasizes Law, Order, and Seamless Travel
Federal leadership has consistently argued that strong enforcement and coordinated security are essential to the success of an event of this scale.
During a White House meeting of the World Cup 2026 Task Force last year, Donald Trump emphasized that the full weight of the federal government would be mobilized to protect Americans and visitors alike.
“Every part of the U.S. government will be working to ensure these events are safe and successful,” Trump said, adding that international visitors should expect a smooth and secure experience while traveling in the United States.
