DC Mayor Attacks Trump
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser erupted in criticism Monday after President Donald Trump signed an executive order placing the city’s police force under federal control and deploying the National Guard to tackle crime in the nation’s capital. Bowser slammed the move as “unsettling and unprecedented,” but many residents — and the D.C. police union — say it’s long overdue.
The decision, announced early Monday morning, comes as part of Trump’s ongoing pledge to crack down on violent crime in America’s cities and restore safety for law-abiding citizens. Under Section 740 of the D.C. Home Rule Act, the president has the authority to take control of the Metropolitan Police Department when it’s deemed essential for national security or public order.
Trump told Congress the action was necessary to “protect federal property, maintain law and order, and ensure the orderly functioning of the federal government.”
Bowser Pushes Statehood Agenda Amid Federal Takeover
Speaking at a press conference aired live on Newsmax, Bowser used the moment to revive her long-standing push for D.C. statehood, claiming residents “pay taxes, serve in the military, and uphold the responsibilities of citizenship” but lack full representation in Congress.
She admitted she wasn’t “totally surprised” by Trump’s move, pointing to his tough-on-crime record and his past statements about restoring law and order in Democrat-run cities.
Crime Down? Critics Aren’t Convinced
Bowser insisted crime has dropped sharply since 2023, boasting that violent crime is now at a “30-year low.” She argued that new local laws have given police “more tools” to take violent offenders off the streets.
But law-and-order advocates aren’t buying it. They point to years of soft-on-crime policies, progressive prosecutors, and justice “reforms” that have emboldened criminals while demoralizing police.
Police Union: Trump Made the Right Call
The D.C. Police Union strongly backed the president’s action, calling it a “necessary and temporary step” to protect public safety. Union Chairman Gregg Pemberton urged city leaders to fully fund the police department, restore manpower levels, and repeal policies that make it harder to keep dangerous offenders behind bars.
Democrats Cry Foul
While many conservatives applauded the move, left-wing politicians and activists accused Trump of political motives. D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb called it “unnecessary and unlawful,” signaling possible lawsuits. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore labeled it “deeply dangerous,” and activist Al Sharpton warned it could set a precedent for federal takeovers in other majority-Black cities.
A Clear Message from Trump
For millions of Americans concerned about public safety, Trump’s move sends a powerful signal: when local leaders fail, Washington will not be allowed to descend into chaos. On his watch, restoring law and order comes first — politics comes second.
