Democrat Makes Strange Promise To Trump
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) is responding after President Trump said he regretted granting the Texas Democrat a pardon on federal bribery charges — a move that immediately reshaped the political landscape heading into 2026.
Appearing on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, Cuellar said he started his day in prayer.
“My wife and I started our day in church. I offered prayers for President Trump, for his family, and for the office he holds. If the president does well, the nation benefits,” Cuellar said.
The Texas lawmaker also stressed that he still considers himself a conservative Democrat and will not switch parties as he seeks reelection.
Cuellar quoted former President Lyndon B. Johnson, saying:
“I’m an American, I’m a Texan, and I’m a Democrat — in that order.”
He added that putting political party ahead of country is “a disservice to the nation.”
Trump Screams Disloyalty
Earlier Sunday, President Trump sharply criticized Cuellar’s decision to continue running as a Democrat, arguing that the congressman is returning to the same party establishment that tried to destroy him.
Trump noted that the “radical left” pushed for Cuellar and his wife to “spend the rest of their lives in prison,” saying:
“Talk about zero loyalty — and Texans, including Henry’s own daughters, won’t be impressed. Next time, I won’t be so generous.”
The comment instantly caught national attention and reignited debate about loyalty, party identity, and Trump’s willingness to give political opponents a second chance.
Federal Case Still Looms Over Cuellar
Cuellar and his wife, Imelda, were charged in March 2024 with 14 counts related to alleged payments from an Azerbaijan-owned oil company and a Mexican bank.
A judge later dismissed two charges, and the remaining counts are scheduled for trial in 2026.
Cuellar has repeatedly argued that the Biden Justice Department unfairly targeted him because he criticized the administration’s border failures — a message that resonates strongly with Texas voters frustrated by years of unchecked illegal immigration.
He filed for reelection shortly after Trump announced the pardon.
Cuellar Says He Will Work With Trump When Possible
Despite Trump’s frustrations, Cuellar said he is open to cooperation.
“I’m a conservative Democrat, and I will work with the president. If I can find common ground, I’m going to do that,” he said.
His remarks highlight a growing divide inside the Democratic Party as more moderate members attempt to distance themselves from the far-left policies that have fueled public backlash on border security, crime, and inflation.
Why This Story Matters to Conservative Readers
- Texas politics could shift dramatically depending on how voters view Cuellar’s loyalty to Trump.
- Border policy remains a top issue, and Cuellar has openly clashed with Biden’s immigration agenda.
- The DOJ’s treatment of political opponents continues to raise questions among conservatives nationwide.
