Republican Says Trump Overstepping His Authority
In the wake of violent immigration protests spiraling out of control in Los Angeles, President Trump has taken bold action — deploying 700 active-duty Marines and doubling the National Guard presence to 4,000 troops. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) is backing the move, calling it a necessary response to failed leadership at the state and local levels.
“The president had no choice,” Thune said. “There was a clear collapse in law and order. Protecting American families must always come first.”
While Thune expressed uncertainty about the exact legal mechanism used to deploy active-duty forces, he cited the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 — a federal law that allows the president to act swiftly during times of war, invasion, or domestic threat. “I assume the administration reviewed its authority carefully,” he noted.
Local Leaders Failed to Act — Trump Stepped In
Protests erupted after renewed enforcement actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Instead of managing the situation, California officials appeared to lose control as chaos spilled into the streets. Businesses were vandalized, cars torched, and law-abiding citizens left to fend for themselves.
“It was a breakdown at every level,” Thune said. “That’s why a federal response became necessary — to restore order and protect lives.”
Despite the disorder, Democrat leaders lashed out at President Trump. California Governor Gavin Newsom accused the White House of “intentionally causing chaos,” while Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass claimed the National Guard presence was “completely unnecessary.”
Trump Prioritizes Safety — Democrats Play Politics
Governor Newsom went as far as saying Trump had “taken over” the state’s National Guard for political theater. But many Americans — especially those watching their communities burn — see something else: a leader willing to do what others won’t.
President Trump has repeatedly emphasized the importance of defending our borders, supporting ICE, and upholding the rule of law. His decision to mobilize the military in L.A. is just the latest example of putting America First.
While liberal politicians complain from the sidelines, Trump is taking real action to keep our cities — and our citizens — safe.
