Trump To Tax The Rich Even Further?
In a bold move that could reshape America’s tax code, President Donald Trump is pushing for a major overhaul that slashes taxes for the middle class—while allowing a limited tax increase on ultra-high-income earners. The proposal is part of Trump’s highly anticipated “America First” legislative package, which promises to extend key provisions of the historic 2017 tax cuts, protect essential programs like Medicaid, and fuel job growth.

✅ Top 1% May See Slight Rate Increase to Help Fund Medicaid Reforms
✅ Energy Independence, Immigration, and Welfare Reform Included in the Package
Trump’s Plan: Cut for the Working Class, Hike for the Ultra-Rich?
According to sources close to the negotiations, the White House is proposing to let the top tax rate—originally reduced from 39.6% to 37% under Trump’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act—return to 39.6% for individuals earning over $2.5 million ($5 million for married couples). Everyone else would keep their tax cuts—or even see deeper relief.
This strategy, insiders say, allows Republicans to counter Democrat attacks that claim tax reform benefits only the rich. More importantly, it secures critical funding for conservative Medicaid reforms, without increasing the national deficit or burdening working families.
“This is about putting America’s workers first,” a senior GOP aide said. “President Trump is focused on permanent relief for middle-income families—not the elite.”
A Shock to Traditional GOP Orthodoxy?
The proposal caught many off guard. For decades, Republican leaders stood firmly against any form of tax increase. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has been publicly hesitant to embrace the idea, despite reports that Trump personally urged him to back it.
“I’m not in favor of raising tax rates—that’s not what our party is about,” Johnson told Fox News last month.
Still, Trump is playing a long game. In a recent interview, he admitted:
“I love the concept, but I don’t want fake news to use it against me politically.”
Conservative Groups Sound the Alarm
Not all conservatives are on board. Influential groups like Americans for Tax Reform, Club for Growth, and Americans for Prosperity are warning lawmakers to stick to the Republican brand: low taxes, less government.
“If Republicans raise taxes, they risk losing the House—and Democrats will go straight back to impeachment,” warned David McIntosh of Club for Growth.
“Unbelievable that they’d raise taxes instead of cutting Biden’s trillion-dollar climate boondoggles,” added Brent Gardner of Americans for Prosperity.
Some See a Smarter Strategy
Yet others, like Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), are calling it a savvy move—but only if it ensures real reductions in government waste.
“I believe all taxes should be lower, but this plan results in a net tax decrease for Americans. It’s smart—if we get serious about shrinking government.”
What’s Next?
House Republicans are racing to finalize the “Trump Agenda” megabill, which includes:
- Permanent middle-class tax cuts
- Energy independence policies
- Immigration enforcement
- Medicaid overhaul
- Debt ceiling management
The House Ways and Means Committee will begin marking up the tax provisions this week.
One thing is clear: President Trump is once again turning conventional politics on its head—fighting for working Americans, not coastal elites. And with this tax blueprint, he may have found a way to deliver relief, fund reforms, and outmaneuver the radical left—all at once.
Absolutely not. He didn’t defeat him the first time, either.
