GOP Doubles Down On Jack Smith
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and several prominent Republican lawmakers are demanding a full Department of Justice investigation into former Special Counsel Jack Smith — accusing him of using federal power to launch a political witch hunt against conservative members of Congress and allies of President Donald Trump.
“Jack Smith acted as a rogue prosecutor on a weaponized mission against Republican senators,” Blackburn wrote Friday on X. “There must be real consequences for this abuse of power.”
The Tennessee senator, joined by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), and Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.), sent a formal letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi. The letter alleges that Smith and his team took “concerted steps to spy on duly elected members of Congress” — a stunning accusation that has rocked Washington.
Republicans Say Smith’s Actions Violated the Constitution
The lawmakers argue that Smith’s actions represent “serious prosecutorial misconduct” and have requested that he be referred to the DOJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility — the internal division responsible for investigating federal lawyers accused of wrongdoing.
They further urged the department to forward its findings to Tennessee and New York state agencies, where Smith holds law licenses, suggesting that disbarment “should absolutely be considered.”
“These actions cannot go unpunished,” Blackburn said. “Americans deserve to know if political power was used to silence those who support President Trump.”
FBI Allegedly Targeted Phone Records of GOP Lawmakers
Smith, who led two controversial investigations into President Trump — one concerning alleged election interference and another involving classified documents — allegedly approved the FBI’s review of phone records from at least nine Republican lawmakers, including Blackburn herself.
“To the best of our knowledge, this fishing expedition had one motive,” the lawmakers wrote. “We are Republicans who proudly support President Trump.”
Conservatives say the revelation confirms what many feared: that parts of the federal government have been turned into political weapons aimed at silencing dissent.
Smith Resigns Amid Mounting Backlash
Jack Smith resigned from the DOJ in January, reportedly after completing his investigations and signaling last year that he would step down once President Trump returned to office — in line with internal DOJ policy prohibiting the prosecution of a sitting president.
In a rare October interview, Smith attempted to defend his actions, calling accusations of political bias “ludicrous.”
But his critics aren’t buying it. They point to his long history of partisan prosecutions and claim his investigations were never about justice — but about stopping Trump’s comeback and intimidating his allies.
A Growing Pattern of Political Retaliation
In recent weeks, three of Trump’s most vocal opponents — New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey, and ex-National Security Adviser John Bolton — have each faced federal indictments.
Smith, ironically, warned about the dangers of political prosecutions before leaving office. “If you’re determined to reach a political outcome no matter what, that’s a real problem,” he said. “That’s not what I saw in the Department of Justice — at least not until now.”
For many conservatives, Smith’s words ring hollow. To them, the real threat comes from unelected bureaucrats using the justice system to go after anyone who dares to support Donald Trump.
Bottom Line:
Republicans are demanding accountability — and millions of Americans agree. The calls for investigation into Jack Smith could mark a turning point in the ongoing fight to restore fairness, transparency, and equal justice under the law.
