The high-tech defense system—known as the “Golden Dome”—aims to protect the United States from foreign missile attacks using cutting-edge space-based technology. According to Pentagon officials, this initiative will redefine 21st-century warfare and deterrence.
A staggering $25 billion has already been allocated in next year’s defense budget, but long-term projections estimate the cost could climb to $500 billion over the next two decades.
General Guetlein, a decorated Space Force leader, is expected to be named director of the project—ensuring strong military oversight of this historic effort.
The Golden Dome will utilize an expansive satellite network to track and eliminate enemy threats before they ever reach American soil. According to sources familiar with the project, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has joined forces with Palantir and defense tech firm Anduril to lead the design and launch phases.
Their proposal includes deploying between 400 and 1,000 surveillance satellites, followed by a fleet of 200 strike-capable satellites—equipped with missiles or advanced laser systems designed to neutralize incoming warheads.
Importantly, SpaceX will focus on tracking and launch infrastructure, while weapons integration will be handled separately under strict Department of Defense control.
This announcement follows President Trump’s January executive order directing Secretary Hegseth to develop a modern “Iron Dome for America”—a missile defense shield powerful enough to counter threats from rogue states and rival superpowers alike.
Sources say more than 180 U.S. companies have expressed interest in contributing to the project, making this one of the largest private-public defense initiatives in American history.
