A heated clash is unfolding between President Donald Trump’s administration and the Vatican—and now Trump’s top border official is stepping directly into the spotlight.

Border czar Tom Homan says he would welcome a face-to-face debate with Pope Leo XIV as tensions rise over illegal immigration, crime, and even global security.

Speaking outside the White House, Homan didn’t hold back.

“I’ll talk to any of them,” he said, making it clear he’s ready to challenge critics head-on.

“They Don’t Understand What’s Really Happening”

Homan, a lifelong Catholic, expressed frustration with church leaders weighing in on U.S. immigration policy—arguing they are out of touch with the reality on the ground.

“I wish they’d stay out of immigration,” he said bluntly.

According to Homan, the biggest misunderstanding is this: illegal immigration is not a victimless crime.

And he would know.

Drawing from decades on the front lines, Homan described heartbreaking scenes involving trafficked children, abused migrants, and tragic deaths tied directly to open-border chaos.

“If they walked in my shoes for 40 years,” he explained, “their opinions would change.”

Trump’s Border Policies Are Saving Lives

Homan strongly defended President Trump’s tough stance on border security, arguing that it’s not just about law enforcement—it’s about saving lives.

Under Trump, he said, the United States achieved one of the most secure borders in modern history.

That had real consequences:

  • Fewer victims of human trafficking
  • Less power for violent cartels
  • Fewer deaths linked to dangerous crossings

“Thousands of lives are being saved every year,” Homan emphasized.

He added that criminal smuggling networks are being crushed, saying cartels are “going bankrupt” because stronger enforcement has cut off their business.

Pope Leo XIV Pushes Back

Pope Leo XIV has taken a different tone.

While acknowledging that nations have the right to control their borders, he has criticized how immigration laws are enforced inside the U.S.—especially for migrants who have lived here for many years.

He has called for more compassion and urged Americans to listen to church leaders on moral issues surrounding immigration.

Trump Responds: ‘Weak on Crime’

President Trump didn’t mince words in response.

In a fiery Truth Social post, he criticized the pope’s stance as dangerous and out of step with reality.

Trump warned that weak positions on crime and global threats—especially involving countries like Iran—could have serious consequences for Americans.

“I don’t like it,” Trump told reporters. “We don’t want leadership that ignores crime.”

He also described Pope Leo XIV as “very liberal” and unwilling to take a firm stand against rising lawlessness.

Vance: Disagreements Are Normal

Vice President JD Vance took a more measured approach.

While noting his respect for the Catholic Church, Vance suggested the Vatican should focus on spiritual leadership rather than influencing U.S. public policy.

At the same time, he downplayed the feud, saying disagreements between governments and religious institutions are nothing new.

A Bigger Battle Over America’s Future

At its core, this dispute goes far beyond one disagreement.

It reflects a deeper divide over:

  • Border security vs. global migration
  • Law enforcement vs. moral messaging
  • National sovereignty vs. international pressure

For many Americans—especially those concerned about safety, crime, and stability—the issue is simple: a secure border protects lives.

And as this high-profile clash continues, one thing is clear—

The debate over illegal immigration, national security, and America’s future is far from over.
