Liberals are losing their minds.
MSNBC host Symone Sanders Townsend announced she is leaving the Democratic Party, voicing strong disappointment with Senator Chuck Schumer’s decision to side with Republicans on a recent government spending bill.
Sanders Townsend, previously a top aide to Senator Bernie Sanders, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris, revealed her decision during MSNBC’s “The Weekend.” She sharply criticized Schumer, accusing him of giving in to Republicans “like a paper napkin.”
“I’m officially changing my voter registration to independent,” Sanders Townsend said, visibly upset. “Schumer and the Democrats who supported this bill have failed us. There’s no explanation that could satisfy voters like me.”
Her anger was sparked in part by the bill’s significant cuts to funding for Washington, D.C., where she resides. The controversy erupted after Schumer publicly backed the GOP-led bill to avoid a government shutdown. The legislation narrowly passed the Senate 54-46 and was quickly signed into law by President Trump.
“In the last election, Democrats warned that Trump would undermine democracy. Yet, at the first real opportunity to challenge him, they backed down,” Sanders Townsend emphasized. “This was their chance to fight back, and they blew it.”
Sanders Townsend did praise House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for maintaining unity among House Democrats, contrasting his leadership with Schumer’s perceived failure. Many Democrats and political analysts have expressed frustration over Schumer’s approach.
Donna Edwards, former Democratic Congresswoman and current MSNBC analyst, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Democrats can’t say they’ll fight one day and then cave the next. It sends a clear message to Republicans: Democrats can be easily outmaneuvered.”
The spending bill includes billions in budget cuts, coinciding with federal layoffs stemming from Elon Musk’s newly introduced Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.).
Sanders Townsend’s public departure highlights deeper divisions within the Democratic Party and raises concerns among voters about the party’s leadership and strategy moving forward.
