Trump made a very strange decision.

President Donald Trump is extending an olive branch to billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, signaling support for American innovation just weeks after hinting at possible government scrutiny of Musk’s business empire.

In a bold post on Truth Social, Trump addressed widespread speculation that he might revoke taxpayer-funded subsidies going to Musk’s companies.

“People keep claiming I’m going to destroy Elon’s companies by cutting off his government subsidies. Totally false,” Trump wrote. “I want Elon—and every American business—to THRIVE like never before! When businesses win, America wins. We’re setting records, and I plan to keep it that way.”

This shift in tone comes after a tense back-and-forth between Trump and the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who had expressed frustration with the Trump administration’s plan to eliminate burdensome electric vehicle mandates.

Earlier in July, Trump told reporters that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—a key part of his administration’s push to eliminate waste and restore accountability—might take a closer look at Musk’s government funding.

“DOGE might be the monster that has to go back and eat Elon,” Trump said with a smirk. “He’s gotten a lot of taxpayer money. But he didn’t like the fact that the EV mandate is getting the axe.”

Indeed, President Trump made waves in June by signing three congressional resolutions repealing California’s extreme diesel engine bans and electric vehicle sales mandates. The president celebrated the move, declaring it a blow against government overreach.

“With my signature, we’ve officially ended California’s radical mandates,” Trump said. “This is a huge win for working Americans, truckers, and the freedom to choose the vehicles we drive.”

Musk didn’t mince words about his frustrations, calling the Trump-backed spending bill a “massive, outrageous, pork-filled disaster” and “a disgusting abomination.”

Still, despite the policy clashes, Trump’s recent message appears focused on uniting the private sector behind America First prosperity.

“I want every company—big or small—to succeed. The stronger our businesses, the stronger our country,” Trump emphasized.

For now, it seems both men may be recalibrating their positions—with Trump championing economic growth and Musk facing the realities of fewer federal handouts.
