Trump was shocked to see this.
President Donald J. Trump has officially cut off trade negotiations with Canada, slamming the country for what he called a “fraudulent and disgraceful” political stunt involving former President Ronald Reagan.
The stunning announcement came Thursday after Trump revealed that Canadian officials promoted a fake Reagan ad criticizing tariffs — a move the Trump administration calls a foreign attempt to sway U.S. courts and undermine American trade policy.
“The Ronald Reagan Foundation revealed that Canada used a completely fake advertisement showing President Reagan criticizing tariffs,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It cost $75 million — a total scam meant to influence the Supreme Court and other legal decisions.”
Trump: “Tariffs Protect America”
President Trump reaffirmed that tariffs are not a weakness — they are a shield for the American worker. He declared that foreign nations will no longer exploit U.S. trade policies to harm American industries and farmers.
“Because of their blatant misconduct, every trade discussion with Canada is officially over,” Trump announced.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute confirmed Trump’s claim, revealing that the Ontario government spliced together selective audio from Reagan’s 1987 “Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade.” The foundation said the clip was deliberately edited to twist Reagan’s words, painting him as anti-tariff — when in reality, Reagan supported fair trade and strong American manufacturing.
“The ad distorts President Reagan’s original radio address, and Ontario officials never requested or received authorization to alter his words,” the foundation stated, noting that legal action is under review.
Trump Calls Out Canada’s History of “Cheating”
On Friday, President Trump doubled down, reminding Americans that Canada has long manipulated trade deals and hit U.S. farmers with outrageous tariffs — as high as 400% on certain agricultural products.
“For years, Canada has taken advantage of America with outrageous tariffs — hitting our farmers with rates up to 400%. That ends now. No more cheating, no more free ride,” Trump wrote.
America First — Again
The move marks a major moment in Trump’s America First economic revival, signaling that the United States will no longer tolerate deception, manipulation, or foreign interference — especially from so-called allies.
By terminating negotiations, Trump has once again shown the world that the U.S. economy belongs to the American people, not to global elites or foreign governments.
As one senior trade advisor put it, “President Trump is protecting America’s sovereignty, our workers, and our future. No one puts our country first like he does.”
