Trump is cleaning house.
A new Republican-backed immigration proposal aligned with Donald Trump’s enforcement agenda could soon require thousands of foreign nationals to leave the United States—marking a major shift toward tighter border controls and stricter vetting standards.
The legislation, introduced by Wesley Hunt, would eliminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for individuals from Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and Somalia. Under the proposal, migrants currently living in the U.S. under these protections would be required to self-deport within 180 days of the law taking effect.
Supporters argue the move is long overdue.
Immigration Vetting Under the Microscope
Hunt says the bill is about restoring accountability to a system that has failed American taxpayers.
“For years, Americans have been told these individuals were properly vetted,” Hunt said in an interview with Fox News Digital. “The evidence now shows that simply isn’t true. We have to stop this and fix it.”
The push comes as federal investigators uncover what could be one of the largest social-services fraud scandals in U.S. history—centered in Minnesota.
Massive Fraud Investigation Sparks Alarm
Federal prosecutors have already charged multiple individuals accused of stealing more than $240 million from the Federal Child Nutrition Program through a Minnesota nonprofit. The investigation has since expanded into several state-run assistance programs, raising serious concerns about oversight, misuse of taxpayer dollars, and lax enforcement.
Authorities are also examining state-funded childcare providers, many operating within Minnesota’s Somali community, for potential fraud and abuse of public funds.
The scope of the investigation has shocked lawmakers and taxpayers alike.
Political Fallout in Minnesota
As pressure mounted, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced he would not seek another term, citing the need to focus on protecting residents rather than defending political ambitions.
Hunt was skeptical of that explanation.
“When leaders suddenly step aside, Americans should pay attention,” Hunt said. “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. This situation deserves full transparency.”
Walz has claimed his administration acted to curb fraud, though he has also suggested federal investigators are exaggerating the damage—an assertion critics strongly dispute.
Backing Trump’s Law-and-Order Approach
Hunt made clear that his bill supports President Trump’s broader effort to end TPS protections that were never meant to be permanent—particularly in states like Minnesota where the program has expanded dramatically.
“Ending these TPS designations is just the beginning of cleaning up a broken system,” Hunt said.
The Texas lawmaker also raised national-security concerns, warning that unchecked immigration can allow foreign legal systems and radical ideologies to gain a foothold inside the U.S.
“As a veteran who served in the Middle East, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when American values are replaced,” Hunt said. “This is about keeping our country safe and preserving the rule of law.”
What Comes Next
Hunt, who is currently running for U.S. Senate in Texas, says the legislation is designed to lock in President Trump’s immigration reforms so they cannot be easily reversed by future administrations.
“This is about fairness, safety, and putting American citizens first,” Hunt said. “The era of open-ended protections and unchecked fraud has to end.”
