Trump has made his final decision.

President Donald Trump delivered a major shake-up in New York politics this weekend, officially endorsing Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman for governor.

The endorsement came just one day after Rep. Elise Stefanik unexpectedly announced she would not enter the race—an abrupt move that immediately reshaped the 2026 contest.

Trump shared his decision in a detailed Truth Social post, describing Blakeman as a well-known and widely respected local leader with a proven record on public safety, immigration enforcement, and economic responsibility.

According to Trump, Blakeman represents the type of leadership New York needs as families struggle with rising crime, high taxes, and a growing cost-of-living crisis.

Trump Praises Law-and-Order Record

Trump highlighted Blakeman’s close coordination with federal immigration officials and local law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of border security and crime prevention—issues that continue to resonate strongly with voters across the state.

Blakeman, who oversees New York’s largest suburban county, has consistently criticized Albany’s criminal justice and immigration policies, arguing they have made communities less safe and driven residents out of the state.

Trump described Blakeman as a longtime supporter of the America First agenda and a reliable ally who has stood with him from the start.

Blakeman Welcomes Trump’s Support

Blakeman responded quickly to the endorsement, expressing gratitude and aligning himself closely with Trump’s policy priorities.

He credited Trump with lowering energy costs, pushing back against rising prescription drug prices, and strengthening border enforcement—policies Blakeman says New York desperately needs at the state level.

Blakeman pledged to focus on affordability, public safety, and economic growth if elected, framing the race as a clear choice between reform and continued decline.

Economic Growth and Energy Independence

Trump said Blakeman would bring a statewide focus on growing the economy, cutting taxes and regulations, promoting American manufacturing, and expanding domestic energy production.

He also emphasized support for veterans, election integrity, and constitutional rights—issues that remain especially important to older voters concerned about stability and national direction.

Democrats Push Back as Field Shifts

The endorsement comes as Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul seeks another term following her rise to office in 2021 after the resignation of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Hochul’s campaign quickly criticized the endorsement, attempting to tie Blakeman closely to Trump and pointing to Blakeman’s past electoral losses, including earlier congressional and Senate bids.

Democrats also cited pre-Stefanik polling showing Hochul with a significant advantage—though those surveys were conducted before the Republican field was reshaped.

A Tough Road, But Republicans See Opportunity

New York has not elected a Republican governor in more than two decades. The last to do so was George Pataki, who won a third term in 2002.

Still, Republicans argue the political environment has changed. Rising crime, persistent affordability concerns, and frustration with one-party rule in Albany have opened the door to new possibilities.

With Trump now fully behind Blakeman, the race for governor is entering a new phase—one that could test whether New York voters are ready for a dramatic shift in leadership.
