Letitia James should’ve never messed with Trump.

In a political earthquake, the Department of Justice has convened a federal grand jury to investigate New York Attorney General Letitia James — a major escalation in President Donald Trump’s fight against the Democrat prosecutor who has spent years trying to bring him down.

The bombshell investigation, based in Albany, is reportedly examining possible violations of civil rights. Two sources told Fox News Digital that the probe was launched under the direction of Attorney General Pam Bondi, one of Trump’s closest allies.

This week, James’ office was hit with federal subpoenas demanding documents — including materials tied to her politically charged civil fraud lawsuit against Trump. That case, filed in 2022, led to a staggering $454 million judgment against the president, which he is now aggressively appealing.

James, a Democrat first elected in 2018, has made no secret of her mission to target Trump and block his conservative agenda. She has repeatedly sued to stop his administration’s executive orders, from cutting wasteful government spending to protecting children from irreversible transgender procedures.

A spokesperson for James responded by accusing the DOJ of “weaponization” — but critics say James herself has turned her office into a political attack machine, using taxpayer dollars to wage personal battles against Trump and conservative organizations like the National Rifle Association.

This isn’t the only federal cloud over James. Earlier this year, Trump’s Federal Housing Finance Agency asked Bondi to investigate James for alleged mortgage fraud. That case is being led by Pardon Attorney Ed Martin, who also heads a DOJ task force targeting political abuse of power. Martin is simultaneously investigating Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) over similar allegations.

James has denied the mortgage-related charges, but Trump isn’t buying it. On Truth Social, he blasted her as a “wacky crook” and called for her to resign immediately.

The grand jury process — which examines evidence, questions witnesses, and determines whether criminal charges are warranted — could take weeks or months. But history shows that grand juries often return indictments once convened.

For James, this is more than just a legal challenge — it’s a high-stakes showdown with a president who has made it clear he will not back down.

With the DOJ now investigating one of Trump’s loudest political enemies, the balance of power in New York politics could be about to shift — in a very big way.
