The fiery exchange began after Ocasio-Cortez sent a dramatic fundraising email Thursday night, demanding “grassroots donations” of just $5 or more while claiming President Trump “decided one day he wants to make sure kids are dying because they don’t have access to insurance.”

Critics blasted the message as “unhinged” and “disconnected from reality.”

“This is about people being able to insure their children,” she declared, while hinting at a possible 2028 Senate or even presidential run.

But her claims came just hours after Democrats in the Senate blocked a short-term Republican funding bill, triggering a partial government shutdown at midnight on Wednesday.

Democrats Demand More Spending — Trump Holds the Line

Ocasio-Cortez and her progressive allies are demanding a one-year extension of pandemic-era tax credits that temporarily made government-subsidized health insurance cheaper. They also want to roll back parts of Trump’s popular “big, beautiful bill” — the spending reform package designed to cut waste and restore fiscal accountability.

The changes, which don’t take effect immediately, are already encouraging states to trim bloated Medicaid payments that have skyrocketed since 2020.
