President Trump is putting New York Democrats on notice.
Republican Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) says he fully supports Trump’s plan to deploy National Guard troops into New York City to help restore safety and fight back against spiraling crime.
Lawler Backs Trump’s Plan for NYC
Speaking on CBS’ Face the Nation, Lawler didn’t hesitate when asked about Trump sending in troops:
“I’d rather all of the above,” he said, endorsing the National Guard working with the FBI and local police.
When pressed about the use of federal taxpayer dollars, Lawler fired back at Democrats in charge:
“Crime has been a problem in New York for years, and [Gov.] Kathy Hochul in Albany and New York City Democrats have failed to tackle this crisis.”
Even Hochul Already Used the Guard
Lawler reminded viewers that Governor Hochul herself deployed 750 National Guard members in March 2024 to patrol subways after violent incidents — including a conductor being slashed and passengers shoved onto train tracks.
That deployment shows the double standard, critics say. Democrats resist Trump’s law-and-order moves, but resort to the same measures when chaos erupts under their watch.
Crime Stats Reveal Mixed Picture
New York Police Department data show murders down 14%, burglaries down 7.8%, and robberies down 7.1% early in 2025 compared to last year.
But not everything is improving. Rape cases spiked 20%, raising alarm for women’s safety across the city. Officials partly blame an expanded legal definition, but many argue it’s the result of weak policies that embolden criminals.
Bronx Shooting Shows Urgency
The latest flashpoint came this weekend in the Bronx. A gang-related shooting at a park basketball tournament left one dead, four injured, and four arrested — the kind of violence that has residents demanding action.
Trump’s National Crime Crackdown
Trump has already deployed National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., after a brutal attack on former staffer Edward Coristine, known as “Big Balls,” who was beaten by teenagers during a carjacking attempt.
Those troops are not making arrests but are working with the FBI and local police to help reclaim the streets.
Now Trump is setting his sights on Chicago next, followed by New York City.
“I think Chicago will be our next [stop] and then we’ll help with New York,” Trump declared from the Oval Office on Friday.
Why This Matters
For New Yorkers tired of rising assaults, dangerous subways, and reckless leadership from Albany, Trump’s promise of law and order is striking a chord. Many see his crackdown as the only real solution to restore safety for families, commuters, and seniors alike.
