Here’s what happened.
A man reportedly connected to the security team of progressive Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett was shot and killed Wednesday night during a tense police standoff in Dallas after authorities attempted to arrest him on charges that included impersonating a law enforcement officer.
According to reports, officers with the Dallas Police Department tracked the suspect to a parking garage at Children’s Medical Center Dallas while attempting to serve an active arrest warrant.
The situation quickly escalated into a SWAT-style confrontation.
Dallas Police Confront Armed Suspect
Authorities say the incident began shortly after 11 p.m. when officers located the suspect inside a vehicle in the hospital’s parking garage.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said officers attempted to peacefully resolve the situation.
Police deployed tear gas in an effort to force the suspect to exit the vehicle. However, once the man emerged, he reportedly pointed a firearm toward officers.
Police then opened fire.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials confirmed that although the man displayed a weapon and pointed it toward officers, he did not fire the gun. No police officers were injured during the confrontation.
Suspect Accused Of Impersonating Law Enforcement
Authorities say the suspect had been wanted on charges related to impersonating a police officer.
According to investigators, he allegedly posed as a law enforcement officer while operating a business that recruited off-duty officers to work private security assignments.
Law enforcement sources also told local media the man used multiple aliases, including the name “Mike King.”
Investigators claim he supervised security teams working at several downtown Dallas hotels and at his church.
Connection To Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett
Sources told reporters that the suspect had previously worked security for Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett.
Reports indicate he was involved in providing security during events in both Texas and Washington, D.C., including campaign appearances connected to Crockett’s bid in the Democratic Senate primary.
That race was ultimately won by James Talarico.
Authorities have not said whether Crockett or her campaign had any knowledge of the suspect’s alleged activities.
Additional Allegations Under Investigation
Investigators say the suspect also drove a vehicle designed to resemble an undercover police car.
The vehicle reportedly carried license plates that may have been stolen from cars parked outside a military recruiting office, according to reports.
Authorities are continuing to review the suspect’s activities and business operations as the investigation remains ongoing.
