Former Vice President Kamala Harris just lost her government-paid security — and it’s all thanks to President Donald Trump.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is now being tapped to protect Harris after Trump ended her Secret Service coverage.
The shift comes after backroom talks between Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who quickly scrambled to fill the gap.
A CHP spokesman told reporters, “Respectfully, the California Highway Patrol does not comment on security arrangements.” Newsom’s office also refused to give details.
Trump’s order was clear. In a signed memorandum to the Department of Homeland Security, Harris’s taxpayer-funded protections were set to end September 1, 2025.
👉 Normally, former vice presidents only receive six months of Secret Service protection. But Joe Biden quietly gave Harris a special one-year extension before leaving Washington. Presidents, by contrast, receive lifetime protection.
Mayor Karen Bass exploded over the decision, calling it “political retaliation” and warning that Harris could be “in danger.” She promised to work with Gov. Newsom to ensure Harris stays safe.
For many conservatives, the outrage rings hollow. Harris spent years blasting police officers and Border Patrol agents as “racist”—yet now she is relying on law enforcement officers to shield her.
Meanwhile, President Trump is staying true to his promise: ending wasteful perks for Democrats who continue to live off the taxpayer long after leaving office.
