Here’s what some top leaders are saying.
New York City’s Republican mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa is warning President Donald Trump to stay out of the Big Apple’s heated mayoral race — claiming any involvement could give a boost to far-left Democrat candidate Zohran Mamdani.
“In this case, President Trump stepping into the New York City race only works to Mamdani’s advantage,” Sliwa told Fox 5’s Politics Unusual. “When the narrative becomes Trump versus Zohran Mamdani, Mamdani gains. Every mention of Trump by Cuomo or Adams just fuels his spotlight.”
A Shocking Political Shake-Up in New York
The New York City mayor’s race has stunned political insiders. Mamdani, a self-proclaimed Democratic socialist, pulled off an upset in the Democrat primary — defeating former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Now, Cuomo is running as an independent, while current Democrat Mayor Eric Adams is also in the race.
President Trump has blasted Mamdani’s radical agenda, calling him a “communist lunatic” and warning that if he wins in November, “He better behave. Otherwise, he will have big problems.”
Trump’s Role Under Scrutiny
According to The New York Times, Trump has spoken with Cuomo several times recently and is considering “getting involved” in the race. Sliwa says he’s not shocked, noting, “Cuomo’s been talking to Trump for years.”
“I would just say to the president — focus your energy on national and global issues that affect all Americans. This New York City election does not impact the whole country,” Sliwa said.
Mamdani Attacks Trump
Mamdani quickly pounced, posting on X that Cuomo is “directly coordinating” with Trump and accusing the president of sending “masked agents” into the city while cutting services “New Yorkers rely on.” He called it “a betrayal of our city.”
Cuomo pushed back, claiming he can’t “remember the last time” he spoke with Trump and has “never” discussed the mayor’s race with him.
Sliwa Blames Adams for Mamdani’s Rise
Sliwa placed blame on Mayor Adams, arguing that his poor leadership opened the door for Mamdani’s rise. “If Eric Adams had led effectively, Zohran Mamdani wouldn’t even be in this race,” Sliwa said.
With Trump weighing his options, the fight for control of America’s largest city is becoming a political drama that could rival any national race.
