President Donald Trump is facing fresh poll numbers that show a slip in approval ratings, even as his strongest supporters—older Americans and conservatives—continue to stand firmly with him.
Poll Shows Growing Divide on Trump’s Presidency
A new Economist/YouGov survey reveals that just 40% of Americans “strongly or somewhat approve” of Trump’s handling of the presidency. Meanwhile, 56% said they disapprove, and 4% remain unsure.
The results highlight the nation’s deep partisan split. Nearly all Democrats disapprove of Trump, while Republicans continue to overwhelmingly support his leadership in the White House.
Older Voters Back Trump Strongly
The president’s most loyal base is clear: Americans 65 and older. Nearly half (48%) in that age group say they approve of Trump’s job performance. By contrast, just 29% of younger voters aged 18–29 gave him positive marks—showing a generational divide that may shape upcoming elections.
Conservative Strength vs. Liberal Resistance
The poll also shows Trump’s approval is tied closely to political ideology. An overwhelming 95% of “very liberal” voters strongly disapprove, while 72% of “very conservative” Americans strongly support the president.
Multiple Polls Confirm Trends
Other surveys confirm these findings. A Reuters/Ipsos poll this month showed Trump’s approval at 40%, down seven points since the start of his second term. The Decision Desk HQ polling average currently places him at 45.6% approval and 51.1% disapproval. A Pew Research Center poll in mid-August found his approval rating at 38%.
The Economist/YouGov poll was taken Aug. 15th to 18th among around 1,500 American adults with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
What It Means for Trump’s Future
While the media may focus on Trump’s overall disapproval numbers, his support from older Americans and conservatives remains solid and decisive. These groups will likely play a major role in the 2026 midterms and could once again prove to be the firewall that keeps Trump’s movement strong.
