Only Schumer would spread a wild claim like this.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sparked controversy over the weekend after sharply criticizing President Donald Trump for comments regarding U.S. involvement in Venezuela following the arrest of longtime socialist leader Nicolás Maduro.
In a public statement posted on X, Schumer warned that President Trump’s suggestion that the United States could temporarily oversee Venezuela during a transition period should “strike fear” among Americans. The New York Democrat argued that similar policies in the past led to serious consequences, claiming the American people “paid a devastating price.”
Schumer’s remarks immediately drew attention, with critics accusing the Senate Democrat of inflaming tensions and misrepresenting the president’s position at a time of global instability.
President Trump made his comments earlier Saturday while addressing reporters, explaining that the United States would remain involved in Venezuela until a stable and legitimate transfer of power is achieved.
Trump said the United States is already on the ground and will remain involved until a legitimate transfer of power is completed, adding that Washington will effectively oversee the situation during that period.
Trump also addressed Venezuela’s once-powerful oil industry, describing it as “a bust” after years of corruption, socialist policies, and economic mismanagement. He outlined a plan that would allow major American energy companies to invest billions of dollars to repair severely damaged oil infrastructure and restart production.
According to the president, restoring Venezuela’s energy sector would not only help stabilize the country but also create economic opportunities while strengthening American energy leadership abroad.
Supporters argue that Trump’s approach reflects a broader strategy of confronting failed socialist regimes, restoring order, and promoting economic recovery through private-sector investment rather than endless foreign aid.
Meanwhile, critics say Schumer’s rhetoric risks stoking fear at home while undermining U.S. leverage overseas. As debates continue in Washington, the situation underscores a growing divide between Democrats and Republicans over America’s role in rebuilding nations damaged by authoritarian rule and economic collapse.
