Pelosi is very upset!
On Friday, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) issued a harsh critique on how senators should approach a government funding vote, indirectly targeting Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in the process.
Pelosi urged Democratic senators to “listen to the women,” specifically referring to appropriations leaders Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who have both called for a more reasonable solution: a four-week funding extension to keep the government operational and allow time for bipartisan negotiations.
While many Americans remember the government shutdowns of the past, Pelosi warned that the current situation would only worsen if Democrats followed Schumer’s lead. “We must not give in to this false choice,” she insisted, pushing for a more effective alternative. Pelosi continued by saying, “Listen to the women, for the People.” Her remarks came a day after Schumer announced he would vote in favor of advancing a GOP-drafted stopgap bill, which would fund the government through the end of the fiscal year on September 30, thus avoiding a government shutdown scheduled for the following day.
The proposed bill needs at least eight Democratic votes to move forward, but Schumer has defended it, claiming that a government shutdown could lead to worse consequences for America. Despite Schumer’s arguments, many Senate Democrats, including those in tight re-election races, have opposed the funding bill.
Pelosi praised House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) for his decision to reject the bill, congratulating him for standing firm against what she called a “false choice” between a shutdown and an overreaching funding plan. She also criticized the likes of former President Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk for offering what she referred to as a “false choice” to Congress, which could harm the working families of America.
Pelosi’s statement made it clear: the fight for a fair deal, one that truly protects American families, is far from over.
