Democrats are clearly very divided.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) faced tough questions Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union when host Dana Bash pressed him about endorsing Zohran Mamdani, a far-left socialist and close ally of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC).

“You’ve been asked repeatedly if you’ll endorse Zohran Mamdani,” Bash said.
“Two simple questions: Will you ever endorse him? And what does he need to do to earn your support?

Schumer, clearly uncomfortable, dodged the question while other powerful Democrats openly back Mamdani’s radical socialist campaign for New York City mayor.

Democrats Split Over Socialist Power Grab

Just last week, Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) announced her endorsement of Mamdani in a social media post. Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) is reportedly considering following suit, according to The New York Post.

Schumer, however, continues to stall:

“I’ve got to continue talking to him. And that’s what I’m going to do,” Schumer said, repeating the line multiple times as Bash pressed for a direct answer.

Bash then asked if Schumer feared that publicly backing a Democratic Socialist could damage the Democratic Party brand and hurt his own chances in the Senate.

But again, Schumer deflected, refusing to take a clear stand.

Fellow Democrats Call Schumer ‘Spineless’

Schumer’s reluctance has angered some within his party. Earlier this month, Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) blasted New York Democrats for their silence.

“Far too many Democrats from New York are sitting on the sidelines,” Van Hollen said at an event in Iowa. “Voters are sick of that kind of cowardly politics. It’s time for them to take a stand and back him — and they need to do it immediately.”

Van Hollen also slammed the Democratic Party leadership, saying:

“Our party has become one that constantly plays it safe — overly cautious, lacking direction. We’ve grown too dependent on poll-tested, donor-approved talking points, and by the time the message reaches the public, it’s been scrubbed clean and stripped of any real conviction.”

Why This Matters to America

Mamdani’s rise reflects the growing power of the radical left within the Democratic Party. Backing him would mean Schumer and other party leaders are fully embracing AOC’s socialist agenda, a move that could alienate moderate voters across the country — especially in crucial swing states heading into the 2026 elections.

For conservative Americans, this is a warning sign: if socialist candidates continue to gain traction, New York City could become a blueprint for far-left policies nationwide, from defunding the police to higher taxes and government control.

Final Thoughts

Schumer’s refusal to take a stand reveals a deep divide within the Democratic Party. As Ocasio-Cortez and her allies grow stronger, traditional Democrats are struggling to hold their party together.
