There is a battle for power going on within the Democrat party.

The Democratic Party is facing a major internal battle after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., defied the progressive wing of his party and voted alongside Republicans to pass a critical government funding bill. The move has sparked outrage among left-wing Democrats, exposing deep fractures within their ranks.

Progressives Lash Out at Schumer

Far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., wasted no time attacking Schumer, calling his decision a “tremendous mistake.” Speaking on CNN, she fumed, “We’ve been sent here to protect Social Security, protect Medicaid, and protect Medicare.”

Schumer was one of just three Senate Democrats who supported the bill, joining Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H. Meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., stood alone among Republicans in opposing the legislation. The final vote was 54-46, narrowly avoiding a government shutdown.

Democratic Party in Disarray

Schumer’s decision has infuriated top Democrats, with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., calling it a “false choice” and urging her party to fight harder. Anne Caprara, chief of staff for Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, piled on, warning that party leaders were caving instead of resisting.

“The battle happening within the Democratic Party right now isn’t between far-left, left, and moderate. It is between lawmakers who want to fight and lawmakers who want to give in,” Caprara wrote on social media.

Adding to the tension, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., refused to say whether he still had confidence in Schumer. At a press conference, he dodged the question, stating, “We do not want to shut down the government. But we are not afraid of a government funding showdown.”

Liberal Media Turns on Schumer

Even left-wing media figures joined the pile-on. CNN’s Van Jones complained that Democrats lacked “alpha energy,” claiming, “This party is tired of watching Donald Trump and Elon Musk run over this party, run over this country, run over the Constitution.”

MSNBC’s Symone Sanders was even more blunt, saying she was “p—ed” that Schumer “folded like a paper napkin.” She even suggested she might change her party registration to independent, a move that highlights growing frustration among progressive activists.

What’s Next for Democrats?

Despite the backlash, some Democrats admitted Schumer had few good options. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., who voted against the bill, said, “We’re stuck with two bad options presented by a unified Republican front.”

Schumer’s decision has intensified the growing rift between progressive hardliners and establishment Democrats. With the 2024 elections looming, this internal battle could have major consequences for the party’s future.
