Obama won’t like this reality check.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis delivered a sharp response after former President Barack Obama criticized the Trump administration over concerns about political influence inside the Department of Justice.
Obama made the comments during a recent interview with CBS, where he argued that the Justice Department should remain independent from political pressure coming from the White House.
“The White House shouldn’t be able to direct the attorney general to go around prosecuting whoever the president wants prosecuted,” Obama said during the interview.
He also warned that government institutions should never be used to target political opponents or favor allies.
DeSantis quickly reacted on social media with a response that gained major attention from conservatives online.
“The Russia hoax wants a word,” DeSantis posted on X.
The Florida governor’s comment referred to the years-long investigation into alleged connections between President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia — an investigation many Republicans continue to criticize as politically motivated and damaging to public trust.
During his appearance with CBS host Stephen Colbert, Obama said certain political traditions and standards followed by past administrations should be strengthened moving forward.
Obama said that while some of the standards he respected during his presidency were not legally required, he believes the country now needs to work toward restoring those long-standing principles.
Obama also argued that the attorney general should serve the American people independently rather than acting as a political extension of the president.
“The idea is that the attorney general is the people’s lawyer and not the president’s consigliere,” he said.
The former president went on to say that political influence inside the criminal justice system could create long-term problems for the country.
Obama argued that the country can recover from many challenges, including poor policy decisions and disputed elections, but warned that turning the criminal justice system into a political weapon would cause far more serious damage.
His remarks sparked renewed debate over the federal investigations that surrounded Trump during and after the 2016 election.
Under the Obama administration, the FBI launched a counterintelligence investigation examining whether individuals connected to Trump’s campaign had ties to Russian officials. The investigation later continued under Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Mueller’s final report found multiple contacts between Trump associates and Russian-linked individuals. However, investigators ultimately concluded they did not establish that the Trump campaign coordinated or conspired with the Russian government during the election.
The controversy surrounding those investigations returned to the spotlight in 2025 after Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard accused former Obama-era intelligence officials of politicizing intelligence tied to the 2016 election.
According to statements released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, officials alleged that intelligence assessments created in early 2017 contributed to years of political division and investigations surrounding Trump’s presidency.
Gabbard argued there was strong evidence that senior officials promoted claims about Russian interference in ways that unfairly shaped public perception of Trump after the election.
Critics, however, disputed those allegations and defended the intelligence community’s actions and conclusions regarding Russian election interference.
For many conservatives, DeSantis’ response highlighted what they see as an ongoing double standard in Washington regarding investigations, political accountability, and the use of federal agencies.
The exchange also reignited broader questions about government transparency, political influence inside federal institutions, and whether Americans still trust the nation’s justice system to remain impartial.
