Former NBC anchor Chuck Todd has stunned political watchers by claiming the Biden campaign may have intentionally sabotaged President Joe Biden during last summer’s presidential debate — just to force him out of the 2024 race.
In a revealing episode of The Chuck Toddcast, Todd told The Atlantic‘s Mark Leibovich that he believes Biden’s team scheduled the first presidential debate in June 2024 not to promote Biden’s chances — but to expose his mental decline on live television.
“I will go to my grave believing that debate was staged to show the world that Joe Biden wasn’t fit to run,” Todd said.
The disastrous debate performance was widely viewed as the final nail in the coffin for Biden’s re-election hopes. Days after appearing frail, confused, and cognitively impaired on stage, Biden officially dropped out of the race — endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement.
Explosive Allegations of a Democrat Cover-Up
These shocking claims come amid growing scrutiny over Biden’s mental state and reports of a cover-up inside the White House. According to CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Axios reporter Alex Thompson in their newly released book Original Sin, senior Biden aides allegedly worked to hide signs of cognitive decline from both the media and the American people.
The book details how some in Biden’s circle allegedly believed the debate would be the best way to reveal the truth without directly confronting the President.
Todd agreed, telling Leibovich that even if senior advisors like Anita Dunn and Jen O’Malley Dillon deny any scheme, he doesn’t believe them.
“Of course they’ll deny it. If I were in their position and I’d done it, I’d deny it too,” Todd said.

Todd compared the alleged Biden plan to the long-rumored Reagan-era tactic of delaying the Iran hostage release until after President Jimmy Carter lost his re-election bid in 1980 — a move many believe helped Ronald Reagan secure the White House.
“No one will ever admit it. It’s too convenient,” Todd said.
Todd also pushed back on the idea that the debate was just meant to “shake up” the campaign.
“Shake up a race in late June? They knew exactly when the nomination was. They needed an opening to replace him, and this gave them one.”
