Romney Talks About GOP’s Midterm Loss
Former Utah Sen. Mitt Romney called for a change in direction after Democrats won control of the House and Senate in the 2026 midterm elections. The 2012 Republican presidential nominee blamed the losses on a combination of policy decisions and concerns about President Donald Trump’s leadership.
In a Wednesday post on X, Romney criticized the administration’s tariffs, the war in Iran and the size of federal deficits. He also took issue with Trump’s pardons, the conduct of federal immigration enforcement and the administration’s handling of records related certain scandals. On foreign policy, Romney argued that the administration had strained relationships with U.S. allies while going too easy on adversaries.
Romney has clashed with Trump for years. He was the only Republican senator to vote to convict Trump in both Senate impeachment trials. After the midterms, Romney said he hoped to see a “course correction” for the country and the Republican Party.
Democrats Projected to Gain Seats in Both Chambers
Republicans went into Election Day defending their congressional majorities amid concerns about the cost of living, opposition to the war in Iran and questions about how Trump’s approval rating would affect candidates down the ballot.
Decision Desk HQ projected Democrats would finish with 261 House seats, up from 214, and 55 Senate seats, up from 47.
Massie Says Republicans Broke Their Promises
Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie also pointed to his own party’s record. In a Tuesday night post on X, he argued that voters were holding Republicans accountable for promises they had made in office. He said the GOP should have put American interests first.
