Kamala Cancels 2028 Run?

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has not decided whether she will seek the White House again in 2028, but many people who previously worked closely with her reportedly believe another presidential campaign is unlikely.

According to Axios, five of eight former Harris aides and advisers surveyed said they expect her to stay out of the 2028 presidential race. Two described her chances of running as roughly 50-50, while only one said she would probably launch another campaign.

The findings come as Democrats begin looking beyond the 2026 midterm elections toward what could become a crowded battle for the party’s next presidential nomination.

Harris Has Not Ruled Out a 2028 Presidential Campaign

Harris has repeatedly left the door open to another White House bid.

That uncertainty has made her one of the most closely watched figures in early discussions about the 2028 Democratic presidential field.

Harris remains prominent in early Democratic polling and has the advantages of nationwide name recognition, an established donor network and experience campaigning at the presidential level.

But former members of her political operation told Axios that they have seen few signs of the large-scale organization normally associated with an approaching presidential campaign.

Those activities have fueled competing interpretations about her plans.

Some political observers see them as evidence that Harris is preserving the foundation for another national campaign. Some former aides, however, believe she may simply be maintaining her influence within the Democratic Party without committing to another presidential race.

The 2024 Election Remains Part of the Political Calculation

Another presidential campaign would inevitably renew attention on Harris’ 2024 race against Donald Trump.

Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee after President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign and ultimately lost the general election to Trump.

According to Axios, some people previously associated with Harris believe she understands that another campaign would bring renewed scrutiny of the 2024 result and questions about what a second Harris presidential campaign would do differently.

That does not mean Harris has made a decision.

Axios reported that some major donors who previously supported Harris are now considering other possible Democratic candidates.

Among the names attracting attention are California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.

Harris nevertheless retains a substantial national fundraising network built through years of campaigning, including a large email donor list.

A former aide associated with Harris’ current team pushed back on suggestions that fundraising would prevent her from competing effectively.

Gavin Newsom Says Harris’ Decision Could Affect His Plans

Harris’ decision could have immediate consequences for another prominent Democrat considering 2028.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in September that he would not run for president if Harris decides to enter the race.

Newsom and Harris have known one another for decades in California politics and share portions of the same political and donor networks.
