The Trump White House delivered a forceful response to one of President Donald Trump’s most persistent online critics after a social media post targeting a female administration staffer sparked a major backlash.
Independent journalist and frequent Trump critic Aaron Rupar drew attention after posting video of White House press wrangler Ellie Acra directing photographers away from an area near Air Force One as the president prepared to depart Ireland.
Rupar criticized Acra in his post, describing her as a Trump “flunkie” and accusing her of shoving photographers away from the president.
But the White House quickly pushed back, arguing that the video simply showed a staff member performing the duties of her job.
White House Defends Trump Staffer
Press wranglers play an important behind-the-scenes role during presidential events.
Their responsibilities include directing reporters and photographers to designated locations, coordinating press movements and helping ensure events involving the president remain on schedule.
Those responsibilities are not unique to the Trump administration. Presidential administrations from both political parties rely on staff members to coordinate the large press corps that follows the commander in chief.
In the video circulated by Rupar, Acra can be heard directing members of the press away from the area near the aircraft.
The White House’s Rapid Response account responded publicly, saying Acra was simply “doing her job — and doing it well.”
The administration went considerably further, however, issuing a sharply worded personal criticism of Rupar and accusing him of repeatedly making inappropriate comments about women working for the president.
The exchange quickly attracted attention across social media.
Rupar Accuses White House of Encouraging Harassment
Rupar responded by accusing the White House of using an official government social media account to target him.
He said it was the second consecutive day that the administration had publicly attacked him and claimed that such posts resulted in an influx of hostile and threatening messages.
The White House, meanwhile, has portrayed its responses as a defense of staff members it believes are being unfairly targeted online.
The disagreement did not begin with Acra.
Rupar has also attracted attention for repeatedly posting about Natalie Harp, a White House aide who frequently appears alongside Trump and travels as part of his staff.
During Trump’s trip to Ireland, Rupar posted a photograph of Harp and wrote, “Look who made the trip to Ireland!”
He also included the hashtag “#TravelWithNatalie,” which he has used in other posts documenting Harp’s appearances during presidential travel.
The White House responded by pointing out that presidential staff members routinely accompany the president on official trips.
Natalie Harp Drawn Into Political Controversy
Harp has become an increasingly recognizable member of Trump’s staff, resulting in growing attention from political commentators and the media.
The controversy intensified after Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia mentioned Harp while criticizing Trump during a campaign speech.
Ossoff accused Trump of being more interested in personal projects and presidential travel than performing the responsibilities of his office, making a reference to traveling with Natalie during his remarks.
Some Trump supporters interpreted the comment as insinuating that there was something inappropriate about the relationship between Trump and Harp.
Ossoff subsequently disputed that interpretation.
There is no established evidence demonstrating an inappropriate relationship between Trump and Harp.
That distinction is important because speculation circulating on social media should not be presented as established fact.

The controversy illustrates the Trump administration’s willingness to directly confront journalists and political commentators on social media.

That has repeatedly placed him at odds with Trump and his supporters.
This latest confrontation, however, centered not on a major policy dispute but on the treatment of White House employees working behind the scenes.
What began as a short video showing a press wrangler directing photographers near Air Force One quickly developed into a much larger online controversy involving the White House itself.
