Musk Swoops In To Save Key Race

Texas Republicans are getting major financial reinforcements from billionaire Elon Musk and other national GOP allies as Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton works to overcome a substantial fundraising disadvantage against Democrat James Talarico.

The sudden influx of outside money is putting a national spotlight on the Texas U.S. Senate race, an increasingly expensive contest in a state where Democrats have not won a statewide election since 1994.

Musk’s America PAC has entered the race with nearly $250,000 in spending supporting Paxton, while additional Republican organizations are directing millions of dollars toward Texas as the November midterm elections approach.

The financial battle comes after Talarico built a sizable fundraising advantage and spent heavily on advertising throughout the summer.

For Republicans, the situation has created an unusual challenge: National political organizations are committing significant resources to defend a Senate seat in one of America’s most important Republican states.

Elon Musk’s America PAC Enters Texas Senate Race

Musk’s America PAC made Paxton the biggest beneficiary of its first major round of candidate-focused spending during the 2026 midterm campaign.

Federal Election Commission records show the PAC spent $247,595 supporting Paxton.

The organization is also spending money in other competitive congressional races as Republicans seek to maintain control of Washington.

America PAC spokesman Andrew Romeo said the organization is working alongside the broader Republican political operation and focusing its resources on congressional races that could determine control of the House and Senate.

The spending demonstrates how seriously national Republicans are treating Texas heading into the final months of the campaign.

Trump Allies Commit Millions To Help Paxton

Musk is not the only major Republican ally entering the Texas fight.

Trump-aligned MAGA Inc. has committed at least $10 million to support Paxton, providing another significant financial boost to the Republican nominee.

President Donald Trump has also indicated that he intends to deploy hundreds of millions of dollars from his political operation to assist Republican candidates during the 2026 midterms.

Trump backed Paxton during his contentious Republican primary battle against longtime Sen. John Cornyn.

That primary created an unusual situation for the GOP.

Republican organizations that had previously spent money opposing Paxton now have a strong incentive to unite behind him as the party works to maintain its Senate majority.

Paxton Faces A Major Fundraising Gap

The Republican reinforcements are arriving as Paxton attempts to close a significant financial gap with Talarico.

Talarico has raised more than $70 million since entering the Senate race, compared with roughly $17 million for Paxton over the same period, according to previously reported campaign finance figures.

Talarico’s fundraising performance has given the Democrat the ability to spend heavily on television, streaming and digital advertising.

During much of the summer, that created a significant advertising imbalance.

Talarico spent more than $25 million on advertising after the general election began in late May, according to AdImpact figures previously reported by The Texas Tribune.

Paxton’s campaign spent only a fraction of that amount during the same period.

Outside Republican spending is now helping change that financial picture.

Why Republicans Are Spending Heavily In Texas

Texas has long been one of the Republican Party’s most important states.

Democrats have repeatedly attempted to make Texas competitive, but the party has not captured a statewide office there in more than three decades.

That history makes the amount of national attention surrounding the 2026 Senate race particularly notable.

Paxton emerged from a bruising Republican primary, while Talarico entered the general election with a large campaign war chest and the ability to immediately begin advertising.

Republican leaders have responded by calling for national organizations and major donors to support Paxton.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has said Republican allies, including Trump and his political operation, should bring their resources to bear in Texas.

That is now beginning to happen.

Talarico Makes Cost Of Living A Central Issue

While Republicans work to narrow the financial gap, Talarico has centered much of his campaign message on an issue affecting households across Texas: affordability.

The Democrat has repeatedly highlighted grocery prices, housing expenses, gasoline, insurance premiums, utility bills, child care and prescription drug costs.

His strategy attempts to make everyday household expenses a central issue in the Senate contest rather than relying exclusively on traditional partisan debates.

“I’m talking about groceries. I’m talking about gas. I’m talking about insurance, and utilities, and housing, and childcare, prescription drugs,” Talarico said during a July campaign appearance.

Cost-of-living concerns have become an important political issue as families continue watching prices for necessities ranging from food and electricity to housing and insurance.

Republicans are also emphasizing economic issues, taxes, energy, immigration, crime and other subjects as the midterm campaign intensifies.

Polling Shows A Closely Watched Contest

Recent polling has produced varying results in the Texas Senate race.

A July Texas Public Opinion Research survey showed Talarico at 45% and Paxton at 40%.

Other polling has shown a tighter contest, including surveys with the candidates effectively tied or separated by relatively small margins.

Individual polls provide snapshots of voter sentiment rather than guarantees about the November result.

The attention from major national political organizations, however, shows that both parties see significant stakes in Texas.

Control of the U.S. Senate could ultimately be affected by a relatively small number of competitive races around the country.

Musk Has Deep Business Ties To Texas

Musk’s decision to become involved carries another dimension because of his extensive business presence in Texas.

The billionaire has moved or expanded several major business operations in the state and has become increasingly involved in Texas politics.

SpaceX has a major Texas presence, and Musk has repeatedly praised the state’s economic and regulatory environment.

During a July appearance with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Musk praised the state as a place to conduct business and expressed his enthusiasm about living there.

Those ties mean the outcome of major Texas elections could have significance beyond national party politics.

Texas has become increasingly important to technology, artificial intelligence, aerospace, energy and other rapidly growing industries.

Musk Returns To Republican Politics

Musk’s latest spending also marks another chapter in his complicated relationship with national politics.

He previously played a highly visible role in the Trump administration through the Department of Government Efficiency before leaving government.

His relationship with Trump later became strained before the two reconciled.

Musk subsequently acknowledged that he had become more involved in politics than he originally intended.

America PAC’s latest spending indicates that while Musk may be taking a less personally visible role, his political organization remains active.

Rather than making Musk himself the centerpiece of individual campaigns, America PAC can provide Republican candidates with financial and organizational resources.

Democrats Target Musk’s Political Involvement

Democrats are attempting to turn Musk’s involvement into a political issue.

Democratic organizations have criticized his spending and argue that associating Republican candidates with the billionaire could hurt them with some voters.

Republicans, meanwhile, are benefiting from the resources America PAC can provide as campaigns enter the expensive final months before Election Day.

That creates an unusual dynamic.

Musk does not necessarily need to become the public face of Paxton’s campaign for his political organization to have an impact. Spending on advertising, voter outreach and campaign materials can provide assistance without requiring the billionaire to dominate the candidate’s message.

Big Money Is Pouring Into Texas

Major political donors are playing significant roles on both sides of the race.

Musk and Trump-aligned organizations are spending to support Paxton, but wealthy Democratic donors have also provided substantial financial backing to organizations supporting Talarico.

Billionaire LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, for example, donated $10 million during the second quarter to Lone Star Rising, a super PAC supporting Talarico.

That contribution followed earlier donations from Hoffman to the organization.

The competing investments illustrate just how expensive the Texas Senate race has become.

Talarico’s campaign fundraising advantage helped Democrats dominate much of the early advertising battle.

Republican outside groups are now responding with millions of dollars of their own.

Texas Senate Race Heads Into Expensive Final Stretch

The Texas contest is becoming a major test of whether outside Republican spending can counter Talarico’s fundraising advantage as voters begin paying closer attention to the midterm elections.

Paxton has several advantages associated with running as a Republican in a state the GOP has dominated statewide for decades.

Talarico, meanwhile, has demonstrated an ability to raise large amounts of money and has focused heavily on household affordability in his campaign messaging.

Now Musk, Trump-aligned organizations and other Republican groups are bringing additional resources into the contest.

The result is shaping up to be one of Texas’ most expensive and closely watched Senate campaigns in years.

With control of Congress at stake, both parties have strong incentives to continue spending.

For Texas voters, the coming weeks are likely to bring an increasingly intense barrage of television advertisements, digital campaigning and political outreach as Paxton and Talarico compete for support ahead of Election Day.
