Democrats Try To Counter Trump’s Convention

President Donald Trump and Republican leaders are preparing for a historic political gathering in Dallas, but Democrats are organizing a major counteroffensive of their own.

The Republican National Committee will hold its first-ever midterm convention Sept. 9 and 10 at the American Airlines Center, turning Texas into a national political spotlight just weeks before voters decide control of Congress.

Trump is scheduled to appear during both nights of the convention and deliver the keynote address Thursday. Vice President JD Vance will headline Wednesday night.

The massive gathering comes as Republicans fight to protect their congressional majorities and persuade voters to support the GOP agenda heading into the November midterm elections.

Democrats, meanwhile, are sending lawmakers to Dallas and organizing competing events designed to challenge the Republican message.

Trump and Vance Take Center Stage in Dallas

The RNC convention represents an unusual attempt to bring the energy and attention normally associated with a presidential-year political convention into a midterm election.

Democrats Head to Dallas With Competing Message

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced that Democratic lawmakers would travel to Dallas as part of a counterprogramming effort surrounding the Republican convention.

Among those participating are Democratic Reps. Jason Crow of Colorado, Robert Garcia and Sydney Kamlager-Dove of California, and Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania.

Their objective is to challenge Republicans directly on the economy, health care and foreign policy while national attention is focused on Dallas.

Crow argued that many Americans remain frustrated by higher household expenses and accused Republicans of celebrating their political agenda while families struggle with the cost of living.

Republicans dispute Democratic criticism of their economic record and are expected to use the convention to promote tax reductions and other policies they say benefit working and middle-class Americans.

The competing arguments could make the economy one of the convention week’s biggest political battles.

Jeffries Targets Republicans on Health Care and Costs

Jeffries is also making affordability a centerpiece of the Democratic response.

The House Democratic leader accused Republicans of supporting policies that increase costs for working families while providing benefits to wealthy Americans.

He also attacked Republicans over Medicaid policy and the war involving Iran.

Those claims represent the Democratic Party’s political case against Republicans heading into November, while GOP leaders are offering voters a sharply different interpretation of their record.

Republicans plan to highlight tax relief, border enforcement, public safety, health care proposals and efforts to reduce government waste during the Dallas convention.

The result will be two dramatically different messages presented to voters at nearly the same time.

Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico plans to hold a statewide food drive called “Love Thy Neighbor” as an alternative event during the Republican gathering.

Talarico criticized wealthy Republican donors and politicians while saying his campaign would instead concentrate on helping Texas families.

Republicans have their own plans for Texas.

The GOP convention is expected to provide a major national platform for Republican candidates and the party’s broader message as voters prepare for November.

With the Texas Senate contest between Republican Ken Paxton and Talarico receiving national attention, holding the convention in Dallas gives both parties another reason to concentrate resources and media attention on the Lone Star State.

While Democratic lawmakers organize outside events, Republicans will have two full days to present their agenda inside American Airlines Center.
