Trump Hosts New Celebration

President Donald Trump welcomed dozens of America’s Winter Olympic and Paralympic athletes to the White House on Thursday, honoring Team USA after an impressive showing at the 2026 Milano Cortina Games in Italy.

The East Room celebration brought together some of the nation’s most accomplished athletes, along with coaches, staff members and representatives from Team USA. According to the White House, nearly half of the American athletes who competed in Italy attended the event.

Trump used the occasion to praise the discipline, sacrifice and determination required to represent the United States on the international stage.

The gathering also gave the president an opportunity to discuss the future of American sports, including the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, women’s athletics and proposed changes involving college sports.

Trump Honors Team USA at White House

American athletes wearing Team USA jackets stood behind Trump as he addressed the crowd inside the East Room.

The president described the athletes as an exceptional group of American competitors and praised them for dedicating years of their lives to reaching the highest levels of their respective sports.

Among the athletes receiving special attention was speedskating star Jordan Stolz.

Trump identified Stolz as the most decorated American Olympian of the 2026 Winter Games and joked about the athlete’s powerful legs.

Stolz and Trump had previously shared a lighthearted moment during a presidential appearance in Wisconsin earlier this summer. During that event, the Olympic champion briefly placed one of his gold medals around Trump’s neck.

Thursday’s ceremony included another exchange of gifts.

Team USA athletes presented Trump with an official jacket and sneakers. The president said he planned to give participants special commemorative coins and invited them to tour the Oval Office following the reception.

American Athletes Bring Home 57 Medals

The United States sent approximately 300 athletes to compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

Together, American competitors returned home with 57 medals.

Trump emphasized that Olympic success does not happen overnight. He praised the athletes for years of training, demanding schedules and countless early mornings spent preparing for competition.

The president also joked about his own experience with athletics, acknowledging that his abilities did not compare with the Olympic competitors gathered at the White House.

Trump then asked how many athletes were already training for their next Olympic competition.

Most of the athletes raised their hands.

The response underscored how quickly elite competitors turn their attention toward the next challenge, even after reaching the Olympic stage.

America Preparing for Two Major Olympic Games

Trump also highlighted the prominent role the United States will play in the future of international sports.

Los Angeles is preparing to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2028, bringing one of the world’s largest sporting events back to American soil.

Six years later, Salt Lake City will host the 2034 Winter Olympics.

The upcoming Games are expected to put American athletes, cities and sporting traditions in the global spotlight.

For some of the younger athletes attending Thursday’s White House ceremony, those future Olympics could provide another opportunity to compete for Team USA in front of a home crowd.

Trump Recognizes U.S. Hockey Champions

The White House celebration came months after Trump hosted members of the gold medal-winning U.S. men’s hockey team.

The team visited the president in February before later receiving a bipartisan standing ovation during Trump’s State of the Union address.

Members of the gold medal-winning U.S. women’s hockey team did not attend that earlier event, citing previously scheduled academic and personal commitments.

Trump said at the time that the women’s team would receive recognition on another occasion.

Two members of the championship team, Abbey Murphy and Joy Dunne, attended Thursday’s reception and received personal recognition from the president.

Trump also discussed the accomplishments of the American men’s hockey team, although its members did not return to the White House for Thursday’s gathering.

Not every Olympic athlete accepted the invitation.

Ice dancers Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik indicated in a social media video posted earlier Thursday that they had decided not to attend the White House celebration.

Trump Addresses Debate Over Women’s Sports

Trump kept most of his remarks focused on Olympic competition and the achievements of Team USA, but the president also briefly addressed one of the most closely watched debates in American athletics.

He pointed to his administration’s efforts concerning women’s sports.

Trump has repeatedly argued that women’s athletic categories should be determined by biological sex, making the issue a significant part of his administration’s broader sports policy.

The president’s comment received a relatively restrained response from some of the athletes in attendance.

The issue remains politically contentious. Supporters of Trump’s approach argue that sex-based athletic categories are necessary to protect competitive fairness and opportunities for female athletes. Critics contend that transgender athletes should have greater opportunities to participate according to their gender identity.

The disagreement has become part of a larger national debate involving schools, universities, athletic organizations and government policy.

Trump Calls for Changes to College Sports

College athletics was another major subject raised by the president.

Trump said his administration is working to protect college sports as universities adjust to sweeping changes involving athlete compensation, transfers and the financial structure of athletic programs.

The president called on Congress to approve legislation establishing a new framework for governing college athletics and said he would sign such legislation if it reaches his desk.

College sports have undergone substantial changes in recent years as athletes gained new opportunities to receive compensation connected to their name, image and likeness.

At the same time, universities and athletic conferences have faced questions about competitive balance, athlete transfers, revenue sharing and the future of traditional college sports programs.

Trump argued that preserving America’s longstanding sporting traditions should remain a national priority.

Rain Moves Olympic Celebration Inside

Thursday’s reception was originally scheduled to take place outside in the stone patio area near the White House Rose Garden.

Heavy evening rain in Washington forced organizers to relocate the celebration to the East Room.

The weather change did little to diminish the occasion.

Athletes filled rows of risers behind the president as the White House celebrated Team USA’s performance and recognized the years of work required to reach the Olympic and Paralympic level.

The ceremony also offered a reminder that the United States is entering an important period for international athletics.

With Los Angeles preparing for the 2028 Summer Olympics and Salt Lake City scheduled to host the 2034 Winter Games, American sports will receive enormous worldwide attention over the coming years.

For Trump, Thursday’s White House reception centered largely on themes familiar to many Americans: patriotism, competition, hard work, national pride and respect for athletic achievement.

For the Olympians and Paralympians in attendance, however, the focus remained on their accomplishments and what comes next.

When Trump asked how many were already preparing for another Olympics, the sea of raised hands provided the answer.

Team USA may have returned home with 57 medals from Italy, but many of America’s top athletes are apparently already preparing for their next opportunity to represent the United States.
