Karen Bass Gets Huge Financial Win

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has taken an early financial lead in one of the nation’s most closely watched municipal elections, dramatically outraising challenger Nithya Raman following the June primary.

New campaign finance reports released Friday show Bass raised more than $511,000 during the latest reporting period, compared with approximately $173,000 collected by Raman. The nearly three-to-one fundraising advantage gives the incumbent significant momentum as both campaigns prepare for the November election.

The latest numbers also reinforce Bass’ broader financial dominance throughout the campaign, highlighting the resources available to both candidates as the race enters its final stretch.

Karen Bass Maintains Multi-Million Dollar Fundraising Advantage

Since beginning her bid for another term, Bass has brought in roughly $3.77 million in campaign contributions, compared with about $1.19 million raised by Raman.

That leaves Bass with a fundraising advantage of nearly $2.6 million, providing a substantial financial edge as both campaigns increase advertising, voter outreach, and get-out-the-vote efforts ahead of Election Day.

Political fundraising often serves as a key measure of campaign strength, allowing candidates to expand television advertising, digital outreach, mail campaigns, and grassroots organizing.

Different Donor Bases Back Each Candidate

The latest filings show the two candidates continue drawing support from very different parts of Los Angeles.

Raman’s donor base included television writers, producers, entertainment industry executives, technology professionals, and her husband, Universal Television writer Vali Chandrasekaran.

Bass, meanwhile, received support from attorneys, healthcare executives, nonprofit leaders, real estate professionals, business figures, and longtime civic and political leaders across the city.

The contrast reflects the distinct political coalitions each candidate is relying on heading into the general election.

Race Changes Dramatically After June Primary

The newest fundraising reports provide the first detailed look at campaign finances since voters narrowed the field to Bass and Raman.

They also represent a dramatic turnaround from the closing weeks of the primary campaign.

During that earlier reporting period, former reality television personality Spencer Pratt unexpectedly led all candidates in fundraising, collecting approximately $2.72 million.

Over the same period, Raman raised roughly $401,000, including a $60,000 personal loan to her own campaign, while Bass reported approximately $283,000 in contributions.

With the crowded primary now over, Bass has quickly reclaimed the fundraising lead and appears to be consolidating financial support for the general election.

Bass Campaign Says Momentum Is Growing

Bass’ campaign described June as its strongest fundraising month since the reelection effort began.

In a statement, the mayor argued that the latest fundraising totals demonstrate growing voter engagement ahead of November.

Bass said June marked the campaign’s strongest fundraising month, which she believes reflects that many Los Angeles voters recognize the importance of the election and are committed to supporting her bid for reelection in November.

Her campaign also announced it qualified for an additional $675,368 in public matching funds, increasing its available cash for the general election to more than $1.18 million.

Outside Political Spending Heavily Favors Bass

Independent political committees have also spent heavily to support the incumbent.

Campaign finance reports show outside organizations have invested more than $2.55 million promoting Bass, compared with roughly $88,000 spent supporting Raman.

Raman, however, continues to maintain an advantage in Los Angeles’ public financing system.

According to the filings, she has received approximately $1.77 million in public matching funds, while Bass has collected about $1.26 million through the city’s taxpayer-funded campaign finance program.

Outside groups have also spent heavily opposing Raman, with expenditures totaling roughly $1.2 million.

By comparison, only about $15,000 has been spent opposing Bass.

City Attorney Race Shows Similar Fundraising Gap

The campaign finance reports also revealed a significant fundraising imbalance in the Los Angeles city attorney contest.

Marissa Roy, who is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, raised $73,776 during the first reporting period of the general election.

Her opponent, former federal prosecutor John McKinney, reported just $3,000 in contributions during the same period.

Roy also entered the next phase of the campaign with approximately $144,607 in cash on hand, nearly double McKinney’s reported $72,546, giving her an early financial advantage before the November runoff.

What the Latest Numbers Mean

Fundraising is not a guarantee of victory, but it often provides campaigns with the financial resources needed to communicate with voters during the final months before an election.

With millions of dollars already flowing into Los Angeles’ mayoral race, the latest campaign finance reports suggest Karen Bass enters the general election with a significant financial advantage over Nithya Raman. Whether that edge ultimately translates into votes will be decided by Los Angeles voters this November.
