Republican Delivers Heavy Criticism To Senate
Senate Republicans are entering one of the most important weeks of the year as they work to advance President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda before lawmakers leave Washington for the August recess. With government funding, military spending, judicial nominations, and border security all on the table, GOP leaders say they are determined to finish the job rather than delay key priorities until the fall.
Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) made that message clear during a Sunday interview, saying Republicans remain focused on keeping Congress on track while delivering on the promises they made to voters.
Senate Republicans Push To Avoid Government Shutdown
One of the Senate’s biggest priorities is passing a continuing resolution to keep the federal government operating and avoid a government shutdown. At the same time, lawmakers are working to confirm President Trump’s nominees and move forward with a major reconciliation package.
According to Lankford, the legislation would include funding for the U.S. military, support for American farmers, and the first step toward advancing the SAVE America Act.
“It’s a busy week,” Lankford said. “If we don’t get it done, we’ll keep working until we do.”
The Oklahoma Republican rejected suggestions that senators are eager to leave Washington before completing their work.
“There isn’t a plan to leave while the job is unfinished,” he said.
Trump Agenda Remains Top Republican Priority
Lankford explained that the reconciliation package requires several stages before becoming law. The Senate must first approve a broad budget framework before lawmakers can negotiate the final details with the House of Representatives.
He described completing that first step before the August recess as one of the conference’s highest priorities.
When asked whether senators expect to spend most of August back in their home states, Lankford said that depends entirely on whether Congress finishes its work.
“If we can get our work done, then yes,” he said, noting that lawmakers also have campaign obligations ahead of the November midterm elections.
He argued Republicans must balance governing with campaigning, warning that maintaining the Senate majority will be critical if President Trump is to continue advancing his legislative agenda over the next two years.
Lankford Defends Trump’s Effort To End Political ‘Weaponization’
Lankford also defended President Trump’s decision to nominate acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to permanently lead the Justice Department while addressing criticism surrounding a proposed settlement involving Trump and members of his family.
According to Lankford, the president wants to bring an end to what Republicans have long argued were politically motivated investigations targeting him and those closest to him.
“He wants these attacks on him and his family to finally come to an end,” Lankford said. “He believes the weaponization of government should stop.”
Although the proposed settlement has sparked legal challenges and criticism from opponents, Lankford said the administration is pursuing a lawful resolution. He pointed to the Treasury Department’s Judgment Fund as an existing tool Congress has used to compensate Americans who were harmed by improper government actions.
As examples, Lankford referenced former Navy SEALs who were dismissed after objecting to the military’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, along with Americans whose safe-deposit boxes were searched during FBI investigations.
“We need to make sure people receive justice,” Lankford said. “And we need to do it in the most transparent way possible.”
Senate Republican Backs Trump’s Iran Strategy
Lankford also defended President Trump’s approach toward Iran, saying the administration is combining military strength with diplomacy in an effort to secure a lasting agreement while protecting American interests.
“The president is focused on getting a deal,” Lankford said. “We’ve been dealing with this regime for decades, and every administration has tried to solve the problem.”
He described Iran as a deceptive dictatorship that suppresses its own citizens while supporting terrorism and threatening American interests throughout the Middle East.
Lankford said President Trump has remained firm on several key objectives: preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, ending Tehran’s support for terrorist organizations, and ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open to international shipping.
Military Strength Backed By Diplomatic Efforts
While emphasizing the unmatched strength of the U.S. military, Lankford said diplomacy remains the preferred path whenever possible.
He noted that the United States has the capability to respond with overwhelming force if necessary, but stressed that avoiding another major conflict remains the administration’s goal.
“No one wants to see another war,” Lankford said. “Diplomacy offers the best chance for a long-term solution. But if force becomes necessary, the United States has the ability to respond decisively.”
Republicans Face Critical Week Before August Recess
With the August recess quickly approaching, Senate Republicans face a packed legislative schedule that could shape the remainder of President Trump’s second term. From preventing a government shutdown and confirming key nominees to advancing military funding, border security, and other conservative priorities, GOP lawmakers say they intend to leave Washington only after making meaningful progress on the president’s agenda.
The coming days will determine how much of that agenda can be advanced before Congress shifts its attention to the fall campaign season and the high-stakes November elections.
