Multiple Groups Call For Trump Official’s Impeachment

A coalition of immigration advocacy, civil rights and faith-based organizations is urging Congress to begin impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, accusing him of failing to properly oversee the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The effort is being led by Voto Latino along with dozens of organizations that say they represent immigration advocates, veterans, business leaders, human rights groups and religious organizations.

Groups Demand Congressional Investigation

In a letter sent to congressional leaders last Thursday, the coalition called for the immediate introduction of articles of impeachment and a full congressional investigation into Mullin’s leadership of DHS.

The organizations claim the department has failed to adequately address deaths involving immigration detainees, shootings involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, and other incidents involving the agency.

According to the letter, Mullin has not exercised sufficient oversight over what the groups describe as a pattern of excessive force by federal immigration authorities.

The coalition also criticized conditions inside some immigration detention facilities, pointing to detainee deaths and alleging that some facilities fail to meet acceptable standards of care.

Letter Sent to Congressional Leaders

The letter was addressed to several top lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.) and Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.).

The advocacy groups are asking lawmakers to investigate DHS leadership and determine whether impeachment proceedings are warranted.

Immigration Enforcement Remains a Political Flashpoint

Immigration enforcement has remained one of the defining issues of President Donald Trump’s second term.

The administration has expanded border security operations and increased immigration enforcement efforts, arguing that tougher policies are necessary to secure the southern border, remove dangerous criminal offenders and restore confidence in the nation’s immigration system.

Those policies have drawn sharp criticism from immigration advocates and many Democratic lawmakers, who argue that federal agencies need greater oversight and accountability.

Democrats Also Seek Independent Investigations

Last week, nearly every member of the House Democratic Caucus signed a separate letter requesting independent investigations into two recent fatal shootings involving ICE officers.

The lawmakers said they want investigations conducted without political interference, citing the deaths of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and Joan Guerrero in Maine, both of whom died during encounters involving federal immigration authorities within the past month.

Democrats argue that independent reviews are necessary to ensure transparency and maintain public confidence in federal law enforcement.

Impeachment Faces Long Odds

Despite the demands from advocacy organizations, an impeachment effort appears highly unlikely to gain traction.

Republicans currently control the House of Representatives, and GOP leaders have given no indication they intend to pursue impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

For now, the letter serves primarily as a political challenge to the Trump administration’s immigration policies while adding to the ongoing national debate over border security, immigration enforcement and federal oversight.
