Should Trump Give Himself The Congressional Medal of Honor?

Democrats Accuse Trump of Fraud

House Democrats have released an interim report raising questions about the fundraising practices of Freedom 250, alleging that some donors who intended to contribute to the official America250 Commission may have unknowingly sent money to a separate organization.

The report, released by Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee, claims that donors seeking to support America250 were, in some cases, provided wire transfer instructions linked to Freedom 250 instead. Freedom 250 has strongly denied the allegations and says it has acted appropriately.

The dispute comes as preparations continue for celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

Report Raises Questions About Donation Process

According to the committee’s findings, sources interviewed by Democratic investigators alleged that individuals attempting to donate to the congressionally chartered America250 Commission received banking information associated with Freedom 250.

The report argues that, if those claims are accurate, some donors may not have realized their contributions were being directed to a different organization.

Lawmakers also contend that similarities in branding between America250 and Freedom 250 may have contributed to confusion. The report states that the organizations’ logos were sometimes used interchangeably and alleges that Freedom 250 representatives actively sought financial support from individuals already connected with America250.

The committee did not publicly identify the donors referenced in the report.

Democrats Cite Potential Legal Concerns

Democratic lawmakers say the allegations, if proven, could raise questions under federal laws governing wire fraud and charitable solicitation.

The report also suggests that Freedom 250 could face additional scrutiny under charitable solicitation laws in the District of Columbia, where the organization is registered as a limited liability company.

No court has determined that any laws were violated, and the allegations remain claims contained in the committee’s report.

Freedom 250 Rejects Allegations

Freedom 250 has denied any wrongdoing and criticized the Democratic report.

Spokesperson Danielle Alvarez said the organization was created because organizers believed preparations for America’s 250th anniversary were falling short after years of planning by America250.

According to Alvarez, Freedom 250 was established to help deliver a nationwide celebration focused on honoring the country’s history and founding principles.

She said the organization remains committed to ensuring that the United States’ 250th birthday receives the recognition it deserves.

Differences Between Freedom 250 and America250

America250 is the official bipartisan commission created by Congress to help coordinate the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration.

Freedom 250 is a separate organization established during the Trump administration to support anniversary-related events through a public-private partnership that relies heavily on private fundraising.

The Democratic report argues that the existence of both organizations created confusion among some donors and complicated oversight of fundraising activities.

Questions Over Transparency

The report also examines Freedom 250’s relationship with the National Park Foundation, a nonprofit that works with the National Park Service on conservation and public education projects.

According to Democrats, Freedom 250 operates within the National Park Foundation’s organizational structure, allowing it to use the foundation’s fundraising framework while following different disclosure practices than the America250 Commission.

House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Jared Huffman said the arrangement reduced transparency and limited public visibility into fundraising activities.

Freedom 250 has not agreed with those conclusions.

Leadership and Fundraising Draw Scrutiny

The report also discusses changes to the National Park Foundation’s leadership, noting that several individuals appointed to board positions have previously supported President Donald Trump through political campaigns or business ventures.

Among those named is Meredith O’Rourke, who serves on the National Park Foundation’s board while helping oversee fundraising for Freedom 250.

According to the report, O’Rourke has also participated in fundraising efforts connected to several administration-backed projects, including the proposed White House ballroom, improvements to the East Potomac Golf Links, the Kennedy Center, and the National Garden of American Heroes.

Democrats argue that some major donors have been offered invitations to White House events, opportunities to meet President Trump, and public recognition connected to various projects.

Corporate Sponsorships Also Examined

The committee report also questions whether several corporations properly disclosed donations connected to Freedom 250.

Among the companies identified as sponsors are Deloitte, ExxonMobil, John Deere, Mastercard, Oracle, Palantir, and Penske.

Democrats argue that some of those contributions may not have appeared in lobbying disclosure filings despite the companies being listed as sponsors on Freedom 250’s website.

The report further contends that Freedom 250 benefits from the National Park Foundation’s donor privacy practices, allowing certain contributions to remain anonymous.

Democratic lawmakers argue that this limits public transparency, while Freedom 250 has not acknowledged any violation of disclosure requirements.

What Happens Next?

According to sources cited in the report, the National Park Foundation plans to dissolve Freedom 250 after activities connected to the nation’s 250th anniversary are completed and a final audit is conducted. Any remaining funds would reportedly be returned to the National Park Service for future use.

However, the report notes that federal funding connected to anniversary-related projects could continue supporting celebrations beyond the organization’s planned dissolution.

The Democratic report is expected to generate additional debate over fundraising, transparency, and oversight as preparations continue for America’s 250th anniversary. Freedom 250 continues to deny all allegations, and no government agency or court has concluded that the organization violated any laws.
