Is Trump Losing Influence Like Pelosi Says?

CNN Comes To Top Democrat’s Defense

CNN political analyst Van Jones is defending Sen. John Fetterman as tensions inside the Democratic Party continue to grow over issues like border security, support for Israel, and cooperation with Republicans.

During an appearance Monday on CNN’s The Source with Kaitlin Collins, Jones argued that Fetterman is being unfairly criticized simply because he does not always follow the progressive wing of the party.

According to Jones, the Pennsylvania senator represents a more moderate brand of Democrat that once played a much larger role in national politics.

“There should still be room in the Democratic Party for moderates,” Jones said, adding that political diversity inside the party appears to be shrinking.

The CNN analyst also expressed frustration that some Democrats now treat support for Israel or calls for stronger border enforcement as unacceptable positions within the party.

His comments came after reports surfaced that some Senate Republicans — along with President Donald Trump — have privately encouraged Fetterman to consider leaving the Democratic Party or becoming an independent.

The speculation has fueled growing discussion in Washington about whether Fetterman’s political future may look very different by the time the 2026 midterm elections arrive.

Despite the rumors, Fetterman strongly rejected the idea of switching parties.

“I’m a Democrat, and I’m staying one,” the senator said in a recent interview.

Still, Fetterman has increasingly separated himself from many Democrats on several high-profile issues.

The senator has supported some Republican-backed measures involving national security and immigration enforcement. He has also become one of the Democratic Party’s most outspoken supporters of Israel during the escalating Middle East conflict involving Iran.

Those positions have angered progressive activists and some local Democratic groups in Pennsylvania.

One county Democratic organization in the state sharply criticized Fetterman on social media, accusing him of abandoning core party values and calling for a future primary challenger.

Jones dismissed the backlash, arguing that disagreements within a political party should not automatically lead to attacks against members who hold different views.

He also noted that Fetterman still votes with Democrats on the vast majority of major legislation.

According to Jones, the senator’s willingness to speak openly and challenge party orthodoxy may actually resonate with many independent voters who are frustrated with today’s highly polarized political climate.

Jones described Fetterman as an independent-minded politician who refuses to simply repeat party talking points.

As divisions continue growing inside the Democratic Party over foreign policy, immigration, and national security, Fetterman’s political approach is drawing increasing national attention from both supporters and critics alike.

For many voters, the ongoing debate surrounding Fetterman highlights a larger question facing Democrats heading into the next election cycle: Is there still room in the party for moderate voices?
