Republican Says $10 Million Wasted
Rep. Thomas Massie is speaking out after millions of dollars were spent trying to defeat him in Kentucky’s Republican primary, arguing the money should have been used to stop Democrat gains in Virginia instead.
Massie said Republican insiders have already poured massive sums into his race, calling it a costly mistake at a time when every campaign dollar matters heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
Massie Says GOP Money Was Wasted
Posting on X, Massie criticized party strategists for spending heavily against a sitting Republican while Democrats focused on expanding their power.
“They’ve already wasted $10 million in my race,” Massie wrote. “Imagine if they had used that in Virginia.”
His comments came after Democrats secured a major redistricting victory in Virginia that could improve their chances of flipping multiple U.S. House seats this November.
Trump Backs Challenger in High-Stakes Kentucky Primary
President Donald Trump has endorsed Ed Gallrein in the May 19 Kentucky Republican primary, making the race one of the most watched GOP contests in the country.
Trump traveled to Kentucky last month to campaign for Gallrein, showing how seriously the challenge is being taken by national Republican leaders.
The contest has become a test of loyalty inside the Republican Party as Trump allies seek to remove lawmakers who have broken with party leadership.
Why Massie Became a Target
Massie has repeatedly clashed with Washington insiders and has not hesitated to challenge leadership on spending and transparency issues.
He criticized the handling of records tied to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and opposed a large Republican funding package passed last year.
Those positions made him a target for establishment forces eager to tighten party discipline before the midterms.
Millions Flood Kentucky Race
Gallrein has raised more than $2 million, mostly from individual donors. Additional support has come through the Republican Jewish Coalition PAC.
Trump-linked super PAC MAGA KY has also raised more than $1 million for television and digital ads attacking Massie.
Even so, Massie has built a strong fundraising advantage, collecting nearly $5 million — more than double his challenger’s total.
Democrats Celebrate Virginia Win
Virginia voters narrowly approved new congressional maps that analysts say could help Democrats gain up to four House seats.
Democrats reportedly spent about $65 million on the effort, while Republicans spent around $22 million opposing the maps.
Trump’s national super PAC, MAGA Inc., did not spend money on the Virginia battle, leading some conservatives to question strategy.
Trump Team Promises Huge Midterm War Chest
Trump political director James Blair said Republicans will be fully prepared for the midterms.
He argued Democrats spent heavily in Virginia and still face difficult races ahead.
Recent filings show MAGA Inc. has raised more than $330 million for the 2026 election cycle, giving Republicans a powerful financial advantage going forward.
Why This Matters to Conservative Voters
For many conservative Americans age 50 and older, the Kentucky race raises a serious question: Should Republican money be spent fighting Democrats, or attacking fellow Republicans?
Massie says the answer is obvious. With control of Congress on the line, many grassroots voters may agree.
