Trump’s New Hire Under Scrutiny

Sen. Markwayne Mullin is signaling that adjustments could be coming to the Department of Homeland Security if he is confirmed to lead the agency.

The Oklahoma Republican, a close ally of President Donald Trump, has strongly supported the administration’s immigration enforcement agenda. However, Mullin recently suggested there may still be opportunities to improve how the massive federal department operates.

The potential leadership change comes during heightened national debate over immigration enforcement, border security, and the federal government’s response to illegal immigration.

DHS Under Intense Scrutiny

The Department of Homeland Security oversees several major agencies responsible for protecting the United States, including border enforcement, disaster response, and transportation security.

Recently, DHS has faced scrutiny over multiple issues — from aggressive immigration enforcement actions carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to delays in disaster assistance distributed through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Mullin acknowledged that improvements could be made if he takes over leadership of the department.

“There’s an opportunity to build off successes, and there’s also opportunities to build off things that didn’t go as planned,” Mullin told reporters shortly after President Trump announced the removal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

He added that DHS must remain focused on its core mission.

“There’s a lot of work we can do to get the Department of Homeland Security working for the American people,” Mullin said.

Immigration Enforcement Debate Continues

If confirmed, Mullin would step into the role during an ongoing national debate about immigration enforcement strategies.

ICE operations aimed at removing illegal immigrants have drawn criticism from some lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

For example, Sen. Thom Tillis recently warned that enforcement efforts should prioritize targeting serious criminals rather than focusing strictly on the number of arrests. Sen. Kevin Cramer also suggested deportation efforts may have gone “a little bit off the rails.”

Still, many Republican colleagues believe Mullin could help stabilize the situation while maintaining strong border enforcement.

Rep. Tom Cole described Mullin as someone who understands both the security challenges facing the country and the political realities surrounding immigration policy.

“Markwayne’s very much his own person,” Cole said. “He’s always been strong on border security and homeland safety.”

Strong Support for Trump’s Border Security Policies

Mullin has repeatedly emphasized the importance of securing America’s southern border and enforcing immigration laws.

On his Senate website, he states that addressing illegal immigration begins with strengthening border security and restoring policies that discourage unlawful entry into the United States.

Those policies include finishing construction of the southern border wall and reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which required asylum seekers to wait outside the U.S. while their cases were processed.

“We are a nation of laws and those laws must be upheld,” Mullin has said.

Defending Federal Law Enforcement

Mullin has also defended immigration officers involved in controversial enforcement situations, arguing that federal agents must be allowed to perform their duties safely.

During one television appearance, he said investigators should also look into whether organized groups are funding demonstrations that interfere with immigration enforcement operations.

“If anything should be investigated, it’s who’s paying protesters to obstruct federal officers from doing their job,” Mullin said.

He emphasized that interfering with federal law enforcement is itself a serious offense.

The senator has expressed support for body cameras for immigration agents, though he has also warned that revealing officers’ identities publicly could expose them to harassment or doxxing.

Family Deportation Policy Sparks Debate

Another controversial issue in immigration policy involves whether children should remain in the United States when their parents are deported.

Mullin has argued that keeping families together is often the most humane outcome.

“If parents are deported, their children should go with them,” he said during a television interview last year. “Separating families isn’t something any parent wants.”

Immigration advocates disagree, arguing that children born in the United States have a legal right to remain in the country.

However, Mullin has suggested that some families attempt to exploit birthright citizenship policies.

“There’s an entire industry built around bringing people here in the final weeks of pregnancy so their child is born in America,” Mullin said.

Tough Stance on Drug Cartels

Beyond immigration enforcement, Mullin has supported aggressive strategies to combat international drug trafficking organizations.

He previously defended operations targeting boats suspected of transporting narcotics in Caribbean waters — efforts the Trump administration argued were necessary to disrupt cartel activity.

“These cartels are responsible for thousands of deaths in our country,” Mullin said during a television interview. “They’ve declared war on our streets.”

He praised President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for taking what he described as a proactive approach against criminal networks.

Mullin Says Security Must Come First

Despite his conservative views on immigration, Mullin has said that if confirmed he would focus on protecting all Americans.

“Yes, I’m a Republican and yes, I’m conservative,” he told reporters. “But the Department of Homeland Security exists to keep everyone safe.”

At the same time, Mullin has supported efforts to pressure so-called sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. In the past, he suggested that federal security resources such as Transportation Security Administration staffing could be reconsidered for cities that decline to assist immigration authorities.

Supporters Say Mullin Would Strengthen DHS

Some critics argue that leadership changes at DHS may not dramatically alter immigration policy, which they say is heavily influenced by White House adviser Stephen Miller.

However, supporters believe Mullin would provide strong leadership across the agency’s many divisions, including FEMA, the Coast Guard, ICE, and Customs and Border Protection.

Rep. Andy Barr praised Mullin as someone deeply committed to national security.

“He is a loyal ally of President Trump and dedicated to protecting our homeland,” Barr said.

Supporters say Mullin would continue prioritizing border security, combating illegal immigration, and strengthening the agencies responsible for defending the United States.
