A new national poll is delivering mixed news for President Donald Trump.

While millions of Americans continue to support several of his key policies—especially on border security—his overall job approval rating has slipped slightly compared to last year, according to a new survey of registered voters.

The numbers come as the country heads toward another high-stakes election cycle and as the Trump administration faces pressure on multiple political fronts.

Trump’s Approval Rating Dips Slightly

According to a new NBC News poll, 44 percent of registered voters say they approve of President Trump’s job performance. That figure includes voters who said they either “strongly” or “somewhat” support the way the president is handling his duties.

That number represents a three-point drop from March 2025, when Trump’s approval rating stood at 47 percent.

Meanwhile, 54 percent of respondents said they disapprove of Trump’s performance, up from 51 percent last year.

Polling averages from Decision Desk HQ show similar numbers. Their national tracking average currently places Trump’s approval rating at 43.1 percent, with disapproval at 54.4 percent.

Strong Support For Border Security Policies

Despite the slight drop in overall approval, the poll revealed something important: Trump’s core policy agenda still maintains strong support among voters.

The NBC News survey found:

  • 53% approve of Trump’s handling of border security
  • 44% approve of his immigration policies
  • 41% support his approach to the conflict involving Iran

Border security has long been one of Trump’s strongest political issues, and the polling numbers suggest many Americans still back the administration’s tougher stance on immigration and national security.

Political Pressure Builds Ahead Of Midterms

The poll comes during a politically turbulent period.

In recent months, the Trump administration has faced criticism from political opponents and media outlets over several issues, including:

  • The president’s aggressive immigration crackdown
  • Renewed media attention surrounding documents linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein
  • A series of Democratic election wins in several races last year

These developments have fueled intense political debate as both parties prepare for the upcoming midterm elections.

Trump Acknowledges Historic Midterm Challenge

President Trump has also acknowledged a long-standing political reality: the party controlling the White House often loses ground in midterm elections.

During a recent interview with conservative talk show host Will Cain, Trump discussed the historical pattern.

“Presidents, whether they’re Republican or Democrat, when they win the White House they often lose seats in the midterms,” Trump said.

He added that his administration hopes to reverse that trend.

“Hopefully we’re going to change that around. We’re doing great,” Trump said.

Poll Details

The NBC News poll was conducted between February 27 and March 3 and surveyed 1,000 registered voters nationwide.

The survey carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

As the next round of congressional elections approaches, polling like this will play an important role in shaping the political landscape and determining whether Republicans can hold their ground in Washington.
