“Black Rain” Falls in Tehran After Major Oil Facility Strikes
Residents in Iran’s capital woke up to a bizarre and unsettling sight this week — dark, oil-like rain reportedly falling from the sky after major strikes hit Iranian energy facilities.
The strange phenomenon was first highlighted during a live CNN broadcast from Tehran, where senior international correspondent Frederik Pleitgen described what he was seeing over the city.
Standing on a rooftop, Pleitgen pointed toward thick, dark clouds covering the skyline.
“This is what Tehran is waking up to this morning,” he said. “The sky above the city is covered in very thick black clouds.”
But the clouds were only part of the story.
According to Pleitgen, the rain falling across parts of the city appeared unusually dark — leaving surfaces coated with what looked like oily residue.
“It’s also raining,” he continued. “But you can see the rainwater is actually black. It appears to be saturated with oil.”
Video Shows Black Water Pooling on Rooftops
Footage from the CNN broadcast showed gray storm clouds hanging over Tehran while rain fell across the city.
The camera later panned down to the rooftop surface where Pleitgen moved his foot through slushy, dark-colored rainwater pooling on the building.
Water running down the sides of the structure also appeared dark.
When the broadcast returned to the studio, CNN anchor Jim Sciutto reacted to the images by saying simply:
“Raining oil in Tehran.”
Sciutto also noted that CNN journalists are able to report from inside Iran only with approval from the country’s government.
Pleitgen has been reporting from the region for several days as tensions continue rising following a series of military strikes targeting Iranian infrastructure.
Israeli Strikes Hit Key Iranian Oil Facilities
The unusual rainfall appears to be linked to major Israeli strikes on Iranian oil infrastructure that occurred the day before.
According to reports, Iran’s Ministry of Oil confirmed that multiple oil storage depots in the provinces of Tehran and Alborz were targeted during the attacks.
Israeli officials later confirmed the strikes, saying they had hit fuel storage and energy complexes used by Iran’s military forces.
The Israeli military described the operation as a “significant strike” aimed at weakening the regime’s military logistics and fuel supply network.
Massive Fires Break Out Across Oil Sites
Videos circulating online after the strikes appeared to show large fires and explosions erupting at several facilities.
Some clips shared on social media showed massive flames lighting up the night sky while thick plumes of black smoke rose high into the air.
Fox News chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst shared footage showing several industrial areas engulfed in flames following the attacks.
The scale of the fires may help explain the unusual weather conditions reported the next day.
When oil storage facilities burn, soot, petroleum particles, and chemicals can rise into the atmosphere, mixing with moisture in the air before eventually falling back to the ground with rainfall.
This process can sometimes produce what observers describe as “black rain.”
Middle East Conflict Continues to Escalate
The strikes come amid a rapidly escalating conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
Recent military operations have dramatically weakened Iran’s leadership structure.
Reports last week indicated that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior regime officials were killed during joint U.S. and Israeli operations targeting key command locations.
The developments have created significant uncertainty about the future direction of Iran’s government and military.
Trump Demands “Unconditional Surrender”
President Donald Trump addressed the situation Friday, making it clear that the United States will not negotiate a peace deal unless Iran fundamentally changes course.
“There will be no deal until there is an unconditional surrender,” Trump said.
The president argued that Iran’s military capabilities have been severely damaged during recent operations.
“Their army is gone, their navy is gone, their communications are gone, their leaders are gone — two sets of leaders are gone,” Trump said.
“They’re down to their third set.”
Trump also claimed Iran’s air force has been effectively neutralized.
“Their air force is wiped out entirely,” he said before adding, “Other than that, they’re doing very well.”
A Warning Sign of Severe Infrastructure Damage
Experts say the strange rainfall reported in Tehran may be a direct sign of extensive damage to Iran’s oil infrastructure.
Large petroleum fires can release massive quantities of smoke, ash, and oil particles into the atmosphere.
When these particles combine with moisture inside storm clouds, they can fall back to earth as darkened rainfall.
While rare, similar events have been documented near large industrial fires and oil refinery explosions.
If the reports from Tehran are confirmed, the phenomenon could serve as a stark reminder of how severely Iran’s energy network may have been disrupted.
Global Energy Markets Watching Closely
The conflict is also raising concerns about global oil supplies and energy prices.
Iran remains one of the world’s major oil producers, and significant damage to its infrastructure could affect global markets.
For now, the situation in the region remains fluid.
But the strange reports of black rain falling over Tehran highlight just how dramatic the fallout from the ongoing conflict may already be.
