Calls For Noem’s Impeachment Grow

A coalition of progressive activist organizations, led by Voto Latino, is calling for the immediate impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, according to details first reported by The Hill.

More than 50 groups signed a letter sent Monday to congressional leaders urging lawmakers to advance impeachment proceedings against Noem. The coalition includes labor unions, immigration advocacy groups, and left-leaning civil rights organizations.

The letter endorses a House resolution introduced last month by Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) that seeks Noem’s removal from office. Supporters of the effort accuse the DHS secretary of misconduct related to immigration enforcement and oversight practices.

Among the claims outlined in the letter are allegations of obstructing congressional oversight, excessive use of force during enforcement actions, and the improper detention of minors. The groups specifically cite the recent detention of a 5-year-old child during a federal immigration operation as an example of what they describe as systemic failures within the department.

The resolution was introduced following two deadly encounters involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minnesota. In one case, a woman named Renee Good was killed during an ICE operation. In a separate incident in Minneapolis, federal agents fatally shot a man identified as Alex Pretti. Both incidents are under scrutiny and are now central to the impeachment push.

As of this week, the impeachment resolution reportedly has more than 187 Democratic co-sponsors, though it faces long odds in the Republican-controlled House.

In addition to the letter, Voto Latino and its allies announced plans for a coordinated national pressure campaign. Organizers say they intend to mobilize supporters to contact members of Congress and demand Noem’s impeachment.

Critics of the effort argue the campaign is politically motivated and aimed at weakening federal immigration enforcement. Supporters of Noem say the Department of Homeland Security has been tasked with restoring order after years of record illegal immigration, strained border security, and growing public safety concerns.

Republican lawmakers and conservative voters have largely rejected the impeachment push, viewing it as part of a broader attempt to undermine border enforcement and punish officials enforcing existing immigration laws.
