This was shocking to see.
An Arizona restaurant is drawing widespread attention after publicly showing support for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and other federal law enforcement officers—an action that has triggered sharp criticism from left-leaning activists on social media.
Sammy’s Mexican Grill, a locally owned restaurant, went viral after a video circulated online highlighting its long-standing policy of offering free meals to federal law enforcement personnel. The video, shared by Spanish-language outlet Pulso, features restaurant owner Jorge Rivas explaining why he believes supporting ICE agents is both appropriate and necessary.
In the translated interview, Rivas emphasized that federal officers are always welcome at his restaurant.
“Anyone who works for ICE or serves as a federal agent can come to Sammy’s Mexican Grill,” Rivas said. “They are treated here with the respect they deserve.”
Rivas later expanded on that message during a February 4 appearance on The Ray Stevens Show, where he explained that the restaurant has openly supported law enforcement for years.
“When you walk into our restaurant, there’s a sign that reads, ‘Welcome to Sammy’s, where law enforcement always eats free,’” Rivas said. “That sign has been up for over five years.”
According to Rivas, the policy reflects his belief that law enforcement officers routinely place themselves in harm’s way to protect the public—often without recognition.
“These men and women put their lives on the line every day,” he said. “When Americans are in trouble, they call 911 and expect help immediately. Law enforcement answers that call, regardless of the risk.”
Rivas is a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump and has been active in Republican politics in Arizona. He previously ran in the GOP primary for Arizona’s 7th Congressional District.
Since the video gained traction, the restaurant has reportedly experienced intense backlash. San Diego Red reported that Sammy’s Mexican Grill has received a surge of hostile phone calls, aggressive social media messages, and organized calls for boycotts.
The controversy comes at a time of increased national debate over federal immigration enforcement and public safety. In recent months, tensions surrounding ICE operations have escalated following several high-profile incidents involving federal agents.
ICE has reported a dramatic rise in threats and attacks against its officers nationwide. According to agency data, assaults on ICE personnel have increased by more than 1,300 percent, vehicle attacks by over 3,200 percent, and death threats by approximately 8,000 percent.
This is not the first time Sammy’s Mexican Grill has faced criticism for its political stance. In 2016, the restaurant received backlash after Rivas publicly supported Donald Trump during his first presidential campaign.
Despite the criticism, Rivas says he has no plans to change course. In comments to Fox News Digital, he said supporting law enforcement—particularly ICE agents facing rising hostility—is the right thing to do.
“We need to stand behind the people who protect our communities,” Rivas said. “They deserve respect, and we’re proud to show it.”
