President Donald Trump hosted a rural health care roundtable at the White House on Friday, highlighting his administration’s latest effort to expand medical access and affordability for Americans living outside major metropolitan areas.

The discussion followed the administration’s recent announcement of a $10 billion investment through the Rural Health Care Transformation Program, a policy initiative designed to support hospitals, clinics, and health care providers in underserved rural communities.

Administration officials say the funding is intended to stabilize rural hospitals, expand telehealth services, and help lower out-of-pocket costs for patients—particularly seniors and families living far from large medical centers.

Focus on Rural Communities and Health Care Access

During the roundtable, President Trump emphasized the importance of remembering which policies have prioritized rural Americans as the midterm elections approach.

He contrasted his administration’s approach with past federal health care strategies that rural leaders have criticized for increasing costs and reducing local access.

Several Republican lawmakers representing rural or swing districts were invited to participate in the discussion, underscoring the political importance of health care as a campaign issue.

Lawmakers React to Health Care Funding

Among those in attendance were Representatives Rob Bresnahan of Pennsylvania, Nick Begich of Alaska, Mike Lawler of New York, and John McGuire of Virginia.

Election analysts consider some of these districts competitive, while others are viewed as safely Republican. Lawmakers attending the roundtable praised the administration’s focus on rural health infrastructure and prescription drug affordability.

One lawmaker said the new funding could “significantly improve access to care” in rural communities, while another agreed with the president’s approach to addressing rising prescription drug prices.

Senate Races and Health Policy Strategy

Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan, who is seeking reelection later this year, also participated in the event. His race is currently viewed as competitive, following the announcement of a Democratic challenger earlier this week.

During the roundtable, President Trump discussed legislative support for his recently announced health care affordability plan, which aims to reduce insurance premiums and limit prescription drug costs.

Sullivan indicated he would continue working with colleagues to advance the administration’s proposals.

Health Care Emerges as Key Election Issue

Health care is expected to play a central role in the upcoming election cycle, particularly among older voters and rural residents. Rising medical costs, hospital closures, and prescription drug pricing remain top concerns nationwide.
